I'm approximately 15 months into my workout break and while my body isn't benefitting, I'm pretty happy (unless of course "curls" while drinking beer counts as a workout).

The up/down vote function is good for one thing... It makes it obvious who everybody thinks is a douche around here.

i haven't been to a gym in years, and I'm in great shape. but i think your thought process is flawed.

I had shoulder surgery in February and was given permission to go back to the gym about a month later. Since then, I can count the number of days I haven't worked out on one hand.
Every day. I go to the gym and/ or do something related - even if it's 20 minutes of cardio every single day.
Don't take "time off." I definitely encourage you to take it easy for a while, but are sure you do some physical exercise every day and at least for 20 minutes.
It will pay off, you'll form good habits and it will keep you from making excuses in life "not" to do things.

Unless you're a pro athlete, I don't think very many need that many consecutive days off. I'll only rest 2-3 days max before I get back into training.

I took a week off (month). You start to jiggle on the stairs. Not worth it.

I tweaked my back last week somehow (maybe at the gym?). Took the rest of the week off to rest my back(I have chronic back pain issues). Felt better and tried to work out Monday and Tuesday.....pain got even worse and I'm still having pain. So as frustrating as it is...I'm gonna just make myself rest until my back feels 100% better.
VERY frustrating for someone that was working out at least 5-6 days a week so she can lose weight. Sucks when you actually want to work out....but you cannot.

Unless you just have horrible form, I don't think you hurt it at the gym. I hurt my back once during the gym and it was from a previous injury (non gym) and poor stretching. Most people think they ate going to get hurt at the gym buy it's usually around the house being careless with heavier stuff.

That's possible. Or I could have easily hurt it at work pulling out sleep chairs for parents of my patients. Whatever I did....it hurts. I was really careful Monday and Tuesday as well. Just did the recumbent stationary bike and did some low impact exercises followed by like 15 minutes of good back stretches. Still intense back pain later that night at work.
I go on vacation starting next weekend so I'm willing to give up the gym until then if it means I'll be for sure 100% for my trip.

I have been doing PT for decades.
Taking a week off can be a good thing, grasshopper.

I read somewhere that most experts say at most you should go 12-15 weeks of high intensity training and then take at least a week off. Let's the body recharge and fixes any lingering issues it may have. I know I do it and it works wonders on nagging injuries.
