Have to drive through atl tomorrow on way to NC, trying to decide whens the best time to be going through.

Doesn't matter. You'll be stuck in traffic regardless of when you pass through. Where in NC are you headed?

You could skip Atlanta all together.

Is this a trick question?

Imagine baton rouge traffic only with the population being 5X bigger than New Orleans metro. Safe travels.

I passed through during a weekday around 3ish? and it was fine. Actually really fun in 8 lanes
On the way back, I sat in 8 lanes of dead stopped traffic for periods of time for no apparent reason.
So, I can't help you but if it's bad it's bad

5/6 lanes on freeway thru town ... 50 mph speed limit .... everybody doing 70... no cops in sight ... and it still sucks

I'm west of the Asheville area. I don't know which direction you're coming from but, when I am driving back from BR I will take the Ocoee route through Chattanooga just to avoid ATL.

Coming from covington, how much longer is that way?

Your directions don't involve Peachtree Street, you are doing it wrong!

Depends on where you're going in WNC. For me, it's typically a wash when you consider how long you'll sit in traffic in Atlanta.

Seriously, I lived in ATL for a year of Hell last year. Just think rush-hour rules, multiplied to the nth degree. Folks drive fast, and cutting someone off is just waved off as an "Atlanta Move". Drive closer and faster next time.
Going against traffic? Baring a wreck -- and there are lots -- you should be fine. Headed N on I-75, I-85 or GA-400 on a Friday afternoon? Good frickin' luck with that.

Atlanta traffic sucks almost all day long. No matter if you go thru town or take 285.
In addition ,there is some construction going on on I 85 north of Atlanta.
It's more scenic and possibly won't take as long by taking I 59 to Chattanooga, I 75 to Knoxville and catching up with I 40 E to Asheville.
However, although very scenic, it's curvy and also some construction Eastbound on I 40 near the NC TN border.
Just use Google Maps to make best judgment.

It was horrible when I lived there in 1988-89. I go to visit my brother occasionally.
It's even worse now. Pepper your anus.

20 E to 285 N to 85 N. Not before 10 AM. Not after 3 PM.

I just drove back from TN and had to take 75s to 285e to 85n and it was actually delightful. This was at 9 at night.
Normally, it is awful traffic from 6:30am to 10am and 2:30pm to 8pm every day. Weekends it is random traffic everywhere but not as bad as the rush hour times. If you avoid Atlanta around those times, you will be ok. Not fine or anywhere near cruising through but it will be ok and you won't waste a ton of time taking another route.

We drove to Asheville from Bham. We went there via 411 out of Gadsden, Al. Drove back through Chattanooga. 411 was much more scenic, but going through Chattanooga was faster. Both were better than going through ATL.

It's a big city. Traffic is bad at rush hour. But in general I think it's traffic moves better than Houston, DC, or Dallas if you know any of those.
