Would rather have visited the city of it was still Constantinople but Istanbul is a cool city filled with history still. I won’t be making any visits to turkey anytime soon due to the political situation over there but I would like to see Istanbul (and Gallipoli) someday should they get their shite together.

I went last year, was completely fine, and had an amazing time. Just avoid the Syrian border and any rural areas in the middle / southern parts of the country.

Check out the Ottoman Empire show on Netflix. It's pretty interesting that all this happened right before the Americas was discovered and that the old school Ottoman empire was still a thing until WW1.

If Greece hadn't tried to stay neutral in WW1 then the Allies may have given Constantinople to them which would have been hella interesting. I actually think the Turks have done a good job with the city though once it was sacked. Many folks in the Navy will tell you that Turkey is the cleanest country they visited.

The crusaders didn't just conquer it but looted the city. Wasnt much for Turks to take.

Many books were destroyed as well.

Greeks were going to take it back 100 years ago but the scumbag brits stopped them

I enjoyed it too. It’s Dan Carlin like history. A mix of fact and crazy fiction.

Yeah, I was surprised that Netflix twisted it in such a way that romanticized the Italians so much. The meeting between Mehmet and Guistiani made me lol. They would have killed Mehmet, and even if they didn't, Giustiani would have taken Mehmet's offer. He was basically an outcast pirate who took the job not understanding just how advanced those Ottoman cannons were or how committed they were. He would have sold the Byzantines out in a heartbeat and he sure wouldnt be able to take out 50 or whatever Janissaries by himself. They made it seem like the Turks were a bunch of idiots and the Romans were super human. The Janissaries were nearly as formidable as the Roman soldiers. It's just that the city's defenses were really good. They would have had to cross multiple killing fields where most would be cut down by bolts, arrows, cannons, buck-shot, etc.

I’d bet a significant sum of money you’ve never stepped foot outside of the Western Hemisphere.

It was the center of the Eastern Roman empire for 1000 years after the fall of Rome.

The Eastern Roman empire ended in 1453, only 40 years before Columbus.

The irony is that Constantinople fell because the other Christians didn't give a frick about it.

I think thats partly true.

Had the church not split between the Greeks and the Romans it would have had a different outcome.

Generally speaking the Greek Orthodox church held a relative peace with the Arabs during the crusades... this angered the west to the point that during the 4th crusade it was (Greek Orthodox christian) Constantinople that was sacked, not Arab held Jerusalem.

It’s tough when good places fall to the trash of society. Constantinople and BR apparently have a lot in common.

It is probably my favorite major European city, as a tourist, for history. Haven't been there in 22 years. Holy shite I just got old.
