In April of 2014, an unidentified patient underwent surgery at Downtown Fresno's CRMC, but according to a report just released by the Department of Public Health, weeks after the procedure the patient noted: "By 5/10/14, l had lost 43 pounds, my bowels were not working right, I had no energy, no stamina, and I felt like I might not live,'' the patient stated.

Dumbasses are supposed to account for everything before they close you up.
I hope there's a big payout.

She would have lost double that if it were Brawny

The surgeon got frustrated and quit on the surgery. "Threw in the towel", if you will.

Yeah, that'll do it.

How do we know that the patient wasn't just using a clever new method for stealing towels from the Hospital?

I have a needle inside of me.
A fricking needle
Only about a centimeter long and lodged in my abdominal wall.
My advice from Tulane Med center: dont get an MRI

frick that place. I hope they get sued into oblivion and every person in that operating room can never work in healthcare again.

Wtf, you serious? Why won't they take it out?

I knew the healthcare profession was scandalous when they started cutting up my foot with a scalpel before the anathesia had started working. It didn't hurt a whole lot but it was the principle of the matter.

Trying to jinx them, too??

86K?!! That'll really show them.
After that chump change, the hospital won't have to pay a thing and neither will the surgical team. Insurance will pay any lawsuit or settlement.

This is why we need tort reform to prevent big law suits.

This really isn't a big deal if you have any idea as to how much shite gets left in patients by even some of the best surgeons. I'm not excusing them or saying she didn't deserve something, but this is not a unique occurance.

Our ORs do meticulous counts at the beginning and twice at the end of surgical cases like this. I've seen a few off counts but only once was something left inside (shown on X-ray while patient was still under anesthesia) which was remedied before the patient left the OR. Usually off counts are because something fell in trash or under something or the initial count was off.

Why don't they just X-ray or otherwise scan every patient before closing to check things out?

Why subject a patient to unnecessary radiation exposure when you should be competent enough to count?
Now if they used a towel instead of a lap sponge in the abdominal cavity, to possibly hold back bowel during the procedure, then that is on the Surgical Tech and Circulating Nurse to account for. Usually, you wouldn't count the towel as part of the initial count when setting up for the procedure, as they are mainly used to dry hands and wipe things on the table, or clean the patient post op. But, you are supposed to let everyone in the room know that there is a towel in the cavity, or anything else for that matter, and it should have been notated on the count sheet and the time out board in the OR.
