Like someone above stated, there is supposed to be 3 counts done during a surgery (2 before closure). If the count is off, a thorough search begins and closing of the patient stops. If they can't find whatever was missing, they bring in the X-ray.

The most they could lose in LA is $500k due to a cap on medical malpractice lawsuits.
