I was there last year and felt safe. Just don't be a dumb tourist. Don't wear flashy stuff to make yourself an easy target. Tell the woman to leave the nice jewelry at home. Be aware of your environment at all times. Don't go walking the streets late at night. Basic common sense type stuff.

All of that is appropriate advice for anywhere in the less-developed world. Mexico is more risky than many other places with comparable resort locales. Another way of saying it is that the BVI, Sint Maartin or Barbados don't have dire State Department warnings* for travel there by US Citizens. On a honeymoon, I'd rather play the better odds in a safer locale.

Bad things can and do happen everywhere, EVEN Disney world!

You really need to read the link you posted. It states that the advisory is for certain parts of Mexico. Here is what is says to watch out for in Quintana Roo(the state Cancun, Cozumel and Playa is in)

Quintana Roo: Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya and Tulum are major cities/travel destinations in Quintana Roo - No advisory is in effect.

Found this the other night, not all inclusive but there are a couple of really nice one bedrooms with pools on the beach in Turks and Caicos...

I read it, the tourism interests of Mexico will keep pressure on the Department of State to say that, and I agree that statement is true. There isn't nearly the level of violence in QR that there is in Central Mexico. I'm simply not going to be in QR when/if something bad happens there. The federal government of Mexico has shown over the past decade grossly systemic security problems. Risk:reward for me makes travel in Mexico not agreeable when I can just as easily go other places which are safer.

The egos and stakes of Mexican narco-trafficantes are high, there's a probability violence will spill over into the tourism sector and locales. I won't be there to see it.

St. Lucia just takes forever to get there and is more expensive. I don't have 6-10k to throw on a honeymoon.. especially since I work in the oil & gas sector.. I might not have a job to support that higher end cost.

Look into Playacar Palace in Playa. Location is awesome. Beach there is great. You can walk to 5th Avenue and the ferry to Cozumel from the resort. It's a palace resort so you can visit other palace resorts for free while there. It's a smaller resort but again...being able to walk everywhere was a huge plus.

Playa is a great city, look at AirBnB website for plenty of nice apartments and condos to rent. Food and alcohol is cheap. You can rent chairs and an umbrella on the beach for the day for ~$15 a day with access to bathrooms and showers, food and drinks. The city is very European tons of food, drinks, shopping along the main 5th Ave. There is access to all kind of excursions along there also.

Yep

There are add-ons for lobster tails and stuff like that but nothing we ever wanted.

They even upgraded us to the baller room with a private pool on our roof

My friend is the Mexico expert and he'd tell you, as he told me, to stay in Playa del Carmen. You can ferry to Cozumel which has some of the best diving in the world. I was just there in December. If you do stay in Cancun, definitely go to Isla Mujeres.

Here's his all-inclusive adults only recs he made for me:
Royal Hideaway
or
El Dorado Sea side by Karisma
or he said he liked this one too
El Dorado Maroma

Congrats and enjoy

Don't know what others have said.

BUT

We did Excellence resort in Playa Mujeres. I think it's just north of Cancun.

Can not recommend it enough. Absolutely wonderful. Look it up on trip advisor.

Ahh I see someone already suggested it. Seriously need to look into this.

Even though we did the 2 story rooftop terrace and for us personally we said that is the one thing we wouldn't do if we did the trip again. Not that it wasn't awesome. But we just didn't spend that much time up on the roof/pool up there.

Check out www.amresorts.com if you are stuck on Mexico as they have a ton of options. Also have locations in St. Thomas, Dominican Republic, Curaçao and Costa Rica. They are also building one in Panama right now. We stayed at the Secrets Puerto Los Cabos in Mexico in May and it was awesome.
