If your house is really energy efficient, the difference between the two is moot.

Foam makes all that space usable for storage.

It's great to walk into the attic and not see melted crap everywhere.

Just do a small laundry room with a sink. It's handy when and if you have kids. Stackable washer dryers are also pieces of shite honestly

1. Bigger the better for laundry rooms.

2. Separate closet for shitter. If possible, put a window in that you can open. I hate houses with bathrooms that don't have windows that can open.

Laundry room at my folks' place is also their computer room and where they keep the cats' litter box. It's like a back door atrium btwn the back door and the informal living room.

ETA:

My point is you can multipurpose the "laundry room" if you feel like you are wasting space.

They've got 4300 square feet and 1200 square foot attic to boot... It IS nice.

Both of these are no brainers. I would have reduced the size of the my master BR before I gave up on these. To me the master BR size was the biggest waste of square footage. Put more in the living room and kitchen/seating area.

What's the sq ft of your master relative to the house overall if you don't mind me asking? Master bedroom size is also something I'm struggling with mainly because I don't need anything huge, but I don't want it to limit my resale.

And if you have some extra money, my in laws have a great design. His and hers bathrooms, with a common shower in between. Her dad has 2 sinks, a toilet that's hidden from the shower view, and a walk in closet, then her mom has a toilet that's hidden from the shower view as well, plus a large bathtub, larger sink and makeup area, and a walk in closet. The shower is big and accessible from both sides bc it has a door on each side and it is in between the walls of the separate bathrooms

Damn that's baller as hell but definitely not in my budget ha.

This is what's gonna be our initial house depending on how the family grows/doesn't grow. We're struggling to find something that was large enough to allow us to expand but wasn't needlessly huge (I hate big houses) so we decided to design our own.

If we got large enough we'd move and maybe consider something like that, but that'd be waaaay to OT baller for this house haha.

Not only are OTers all 6-4, 225, bench press 400 lbs, have PhD's and made 32 on the ACT, they're qualified to supervise architects. We really are a rare breed here.

Lol. I worked for an architect in college, and he always said shite like this. "I don't go into a restaurant and ask the chef if I can cook my meal tonight. This is a damn field I have a masters in yet every hairy dick off the street thinks he can do my job."

When I told him I'd be designing my house he just shook his head and laughed. I agree with him to an extent. I've seen way too many mismatched homes that some client clearly didn't listen to an architect (or had a really shitty one). I'm trying to take as many suggestions as I can, but I'm also the one who has to live there so I'm trying to meet in the middle as much as possible.

I love my laundry room. We've got lots of storage for things; have an extra stand alone freezer; places for mops/brooms/vacuum; ironing board/iron; deep sink for icky things.

Regarding the bathroom, YES to a "toilet closet". That's totally just my preference for reasons I'll just keep to myself. I would NOT have it any other way.

couldn't go this route as I think most designs nowadays are so bland and generic (I prefer the craftsman California bungalow that no one designs anymore).

The floorplan has very little to do with the exterior look of the house. Unless you do something really out of whack the exterior of the house can be whatever you like.
