Will eventually be building a house and want to rough out floor plans using computer software to get close to a finial product before I bring to an architect. I had a version of Punch Super Home suite on a previous computer, but going through a computer replacement I lost the software. Any recommendations on good software that is easy to use, gives both 2D and 3D capabilities?

Chief Architect has a consumer product that's $99 on Amazon or at Chief Architects website. We used it for exactly what you are describing. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

I believe it's called Home Designer suite.

Autocad

Google SketchUp for your 3D

FYI, unless you just feel like dicking around with the program, your architect wont use what you bring them. They will only use this as a guide for their initial layout. For this you can use simple single line boxes.

Pay an architect. Regardless of how well you do, it will look like some guy altered a double wide trailer.

SketchUp. Easy to use and you could share files with your architect.

Well that's simply not true.

I plan on doing that. But I guess my plan is to bring him/her a plan that works for us, draw like I want it too look, and if that is not the case I go to someone else. I am not interested in hiring an architect that is more interested in making stuff look "wow" but not functional. Thanks for the input.

Why don't you just browse all of the many floor plan websites and find a few that are close that you could then have your architect modify?

Fusion 360 is offered for free. It isn't specifically made for house plans but you can sketch whatever you'd like.

Draftsight is a free version of autocad, and everything is very similar so you can watch the zillion youtube cad videos to learn how to use it. Sketchup is great too.

Why would you try to do this yourself? Hire a professional

Would you try and sell your house without using a realtor?

That's not a very good analogy.

My wife and I are hand drawing stuff on paper right now. We are trying to figure out exactly what we want. The only thing we are trying to accomplish is to get a general idea of how we want the floor plan laid out, estimate of dimensions, etc. It is a starting point before we hire an architect. Nothing more.
