You are headed in the right direction. You don't have to make things perfect or to a scale. All the architect will like to see is a general flow for the house you are thinking about.

We are trying to figure out exactly what we want

Best thing for this is to use your current house as a guide. Take your master bedroom for example. Is it to small, to big. Same thing for the living room, kitchen, etc. what aspects of your current house do you like. What do you dislike.

trying to accomplish is to get a general idea of how we want the floor plan laid out,

Your lot dimensions can dictate the overall general layout of the house. You will have some imput on most things but leave that up to the Architect. You can specify things like the laundry being connected to the master closet and hallway or having an office in a certain area. Open vs split.

If you have a general idea of what your looking for you are way ahead of most people. Take pics of houses in the area you like. It could be a particular entryway or a certain style. Also houze and Pinterest are good for collecting ideas and all this should be given to your Architect to help create your plans.
