High school graduation rates

Definitely convinced that there's some deception and accounting tricks going on and refuse to believe that high school graduation rates in America have just magically gone way up in the last 20 years.
The numbers just came out for Georgia and the graduation rate for the really shitty city high school around here was 98 percent, the one where 90 percent of the students aren't competent in math. According to the FTE head counts there were 160 ninth graders and 110 12th graders. Looked back and the numbers have been pretty steady over the years, and there have always been about 25 percent more freshmen than seniors at the school.
Bibb County had a graduation rate of 88 percent but there were 1,800-something ninth graders and only 1,100-something 12th graders.
The company line would be "well, we have students transfer and leave the district,
but you also have new students moving to town. Regardless, how the hell can you 1,800 freshman and 1,100 seniors and your graduation rate supposedly is 88 percent.

It wouldn’t surprise me if they started counting only those who made it to senior year to juke numbers.
Or if that’s always how it’s been and I’m just ignorant

I graduated high school in 2010. If you showed up you passed. Really all there was to it.

Want to blame someone? Not the teachers, not the administrators, not even the superintendent. Look in the mirror. Elected legislators did this and have the power to fix this.

They don’t hold kids back anymore, they just keep pushing them up and out regardless of getting the material.

It's because the standards for graduating are comical at this rate.

My freshman class at my high school was over 600 students. When I graduated a little over 200 walked the stage. It's frickin pitiful and this was 12 years ago. Can't imagine the shite show now.

It’s all about the SPS and federal funds.
If a kid misses 20 days, who cares. Just have him sit in attendance recovery a couple times a week to make up the time.
If a kid fails a class, who cares. Just have him go to summer school where all it is now is a computer program that goes over the material. As long as the kid finishes the program they pass the course bc they get unlimited attempts at every assessment along the way.

It's probably like unemployment where they only count people who are looking for work and ignore the leeches. Graduation rates are probably based on kids who are actively enrolled and trying to graduate. The ones who peace out as soon as they turn 16 don't count.

Administration doesn’t let kids fail because school scores are partially based on graduation rate. They push kids through. You have kids that miss 20-40+ days that are still passed. When kids fail teachers are brought in and asked why and what the teacher did to prevent failure. Kids are not held accountable.
I’ve seen kids fail core classes their senior year spring semester and still walk at graduation. Almost half 1/3 of kids have accommodations some of which can’t fail a class. Look up April Dunn Act.

They pretty much just pass everyone along these days. You don’t even have to try to graduate

There was a sr. in high school who used to hang around my neighborhood. He wanted to go hunting with me so I told him to give me his phone number and I would call him. He couldn't write and only knew 6 0f the 7 numbers. I am not sure any of them were right. He was menially challenged to say the least. He was just being passed along every year. Diplomas are worthless now days.

If you have breath, you pass HS now. Graduation rates up while ACT score goes down. Schools frown on teachers who fail kids and fire them. Just pass the along and be positive. The way of the world.
