I teach high school math.

The standards are a joke at best. And even then kids still get pushed through. I’ve watched kids graduate I know for a fact can barely count to 20

ETA: just realized this was an old thread I already commented in. Oh whale

Rates are going up while literacy is dropping.

Schools are just day care centers with optional enrichment.

Well, I guess if you’re kicked out of high school to go to prison, then that would account for most of the “failed to graduates”. The system is set up to “reward” schools for high graduation rates so school systems do anything they can to keep their “statistics” high. Only way they are gonna keep getting all that sweet gubment cheese.

I thought the feds made every state use the same formula? They were using such a wild variety that you couldn’t tell who was doing a good job and who wasn’t

Teachers are ordered not to fail kids. I last taught 7 years ago. I wasn’t allowed to grade below a C without written permission.
It’s not his the low end students being given grades. How many school districts have 35% or more with students sporting GPA’s above 4.0. Texas is notorious for having students receiving an A in AP courses but failing the AP course exam. How do you get an in the course but be unable to pass the exam?

It's because the standards for graduating are comical at this rate. Source: I've taught high school math for 6 years and have watched kids walk the stage that I know for a fact could barely count

I had an ESE student that was non-verbal and was on stage for being on the honor roll.

I’ve been a high school teacher for more than 25 years. I work in a good school and our graduates do better than any other school in the State in college. A house in our district costs over 500k.

We graduate a few kids every year who read and do math at a first or second grade level.

Couple of reasons but mainly if you fail a kid their parents hire a lawyer and that lawyer makes the life of every teacher and administrator miserable.

If a teacher fails to many students they get fired (a teacher can get fired in my State easily). So the rest of us learn to play the game.

I get to go to a meeting next week about why the 10% of students who are black have lower scores on standardized tests than even our white special Ed kids. Good times.

Students get passed along even when they deserve to fail. Life can be hell for a teacher when they fail a student. Teachers don't want to deal with the parents and/or the admin.

If you can recite the alphabet, they’ll give you a diploma.

My high school had academic diplomas and participation diplomas. The latter just meant that you had been in school for 12 years and they were ready for you to leave.

They have gone up but the standards have gone down so it’s extremely misleading

Stats are probably kept by the same folks who count votes in GA.
