a space elevator is basically on the scale of importance for us moving to outer space as the railroad was for moving people out west.

GAME CHANGER.

The ultimate statics problem. I wonder how this thing would handle substantial winds

It's a rigid airship filled with nonflammable helium.

The muslim terrorists won't allow it. Too much science. Not enough Allah and rape of little girls.

Oh helium is flammable. Under correct conditions of course. But pretty easily. Argon (another nonflammable gas) is used all the time for plasma applications

Seriously...there is no way an inflatable tower that reaches to space would last more than a year. This will never happen.

It is an idea that every small child has had at some point. Instead of sending up rockets into space, why not simply build a huge lift.

not so much

As exciting as it is, I wouldn't be caught dead riding up a 12.4 mile high elevator attached to an inflated structure.

And in the US, the Washington based LiftPort Group is also planning is to use a 'ribbon' cable to transport material, robots and even humans to and from the surface of the Moon.
It will be attached to a space station in a Lagrange Point - where the Moon and Earth's gravity cancel each other out out - so a spacecraft or station can remain stationary.
The cable from the station, dubbed the PicoGravity Laboratory (PGL), will drop down to a location on the Moon via an elevator positioned at an area called Sinus Medii, roughly in the middle of the face that looks towards Earth.

holy shite

Worth noting that it's not a space elevator.

They still haven't solved the problem that no material can take the centrifugal force.
