Stayed in new house for first time last night - water has been switched over by city but is not on. How can I turn it on??
Before you laugh this is a female asking - house is out of state and husband is coming tomorrow after the LSU game.

There should be a valve somewhere between the water meter and the house. Maybe at the water meter, maybe at the house. maybe somewhere in between.

Is the main water valve open outside?

Go outside and look for a pipe going into house usually a meter is connected or next to it. There should be a valve to turn or unscrew to let the water into the house plumbing.

If I find the water meter do I need a special tool?

I can come lay some pipe if you need

You are not turning on meter just opening a valve which you can do by hand no tools needed. Hopefully someone will post pics of different types of valves if you don't know what they look like.

Not if you have a firm grip.

A big T handle wrench is made for this. However, if you get down on your hands and knees and use a crescent wrench, you can turn the valve on just as well.
Turn it left 90 degrees til stopped and the valve will be pointing towards your house.

Go look in the yard between where the pipe that goes in your house is and the street, there "should" be a black box in the ground with a little door on the top. That is the meter box and valve. The valve has a flat bar looking thing on the top that when turned on runs the direction of the pipe.

Very good explanation for a woman whose husband is out of town.
