Money Penney?

My dad had a female pilot he worked with in the Air Force with the call sign ‘Mounds’, cause almond joys have nuts and mounds don’t. Maybe my favorite call sign of all times, she was hot too.
Good for her here, but I’m not sure what else she is expected to say or that it is that incredibly heroic. It’s no different than saying a firefighter was a hero for running into a building on fire, it’s dangerous but not necessarily a death sentence.

Easier to say that after fact.

You don't run into a burning building knowing you're going to catch fire. She was going to slam her plane into the airliner. It was her only option and if she died doing it then she was willing to sacrifice herself. That is heroic imo.

i mean it's not like she got a dick sewed onto her crotch and changed her name to Hector.

can anyone in the military tell me why these jets wouldn't readily be loaded for instances like this or any other attack for that matter? what if a foreign country has decided to say, "that's enough of the the US, WE COMIN'".
how are we not ready for something like that?

Her and her flight lead were scrambled to intercept flight 93 after they lost contact with the cockpit. Unfortunately they did not have time to arm the F-16 Vipers before they took off so the only course of action they had to bring it down was to ram the airliner's control surfaces with their wings and hope to have time to eject after impact. The passengers brought the plane down before they could intercept.
That was one of the more alarming things about 9/11 for me. The people responsible for defending the entire eastern seaboard couldn't muster one armed fighter aircraft fast enough to respond to a surprise air attack.

Wonder if you could fly by very fast, supersonic right in line with 93. Create a vortex and cause Haji to lose control.

I'm sure now they possibly are. But back then it was like securing a rifle. The rifle must stay secured until it's ready to use. It's the same with missles and rockets. They are safeguarded until they are ready to use.

These were American commercial airliners. You don’t think we’d notice some foreign military aircraft approaching US airspace?

Alert aircraft prior to 9-11 were very few in numbers, post 9-11 we ramped up alert aircraft.
The aircraft aren't setting on the ramp loaded up for bear day after day.

I remember hearing about her probably 2 years ago and I couldn't understand how it wasn't a more well known story.
She and her flight lead took off knowing full well they didn't have any option to take it down other than to ram it.
They are heroes in my book
I can't believe I am just hearing about this now. What a great story!

There would plenty of warning if another country did this, it wouldn't be possible to hide it. No one expected commercial airliners to used and from all accounts, the fog of war was very thick on 9/11.

I remember seeing this on YouTube.
Could she have headed her jet into the airliner and ejected?
Are the directed to die with the impact? Or is it one of those situations where One doesn’t want to live after slamming into an airliner?

I don't know why you're getting so many down votes. This is like a story about a cop after a school shooting who was "about to go" into the building.

The real heroes were on the plane and actually sacrificed themselves.

They definitely could've done this successfully and survived IMO.

Well no. That isn't even remotely a good comparison.
A cop would still be armed and would still have seemingly better options than to just run head first at a shooter.
She took off knowing that her only option was to commit suicide.
