oh not not all health wise.

Although they have good science to support that people who drink 1 glass of ANY alcohol every day have better health later in life. They did a 60 minutes on it.

Lesley Stahl: What about alcohol?

Claudia Kawas: Oh. Alcohol made a difference.

But it may not be what you think...

Claudia Kawas: Moderate alcohol was associated with living longer than individuals who did not consume alcohol.

Lesley Stahl: Wait a minute. Ha-- moderate-- alcohol you live longer?

Claudia Kawas: Yes.
Up to two drinks a day led to a 10-15 percent reduced risk of death compared to non-drinkers.

Jane Whistler: Isn't that exciting?

And any kind of alcohol seemed to do the trick.

Claudia Kawas: A lot of people like to say it's only red wine. In our hands it didn't seem to matter.

Lesley Stahl: Martinis just as good.

Claudia Kawas: Yeah.

And there's good news for coffee drinkers. Caffeine intake equivalent to 1-3 cups of coffee a day was better than more, or none.

Really cool story about how they got thousands of people to take lifestyle surveys in 1980 and they are following up and finding similarities/correlation in those that died/aged worse and those that didn't.

What about social smoking? You know, the pack a day weekend smoker that doesn't smoke during the week.

What about having 1 glass of red wine or scotch every weeknight after dinner AND binge drinking on the weekends.

I limit weeknights to 1, but usually go hard in the paint on Saturdays and occasionally Fridays as well.

Is the guy who smokes 3 cigarettes a day worse off than the guy who smokes a pack on the week end? I'd say they're about the same.

The regular drinker.

6 ozs. of alcohol daily is too much per my doc. He's pretty easygoing so for him to say that, I believe he's accurate.

I liked him, too.

My takeaway from that is that Lesley probably wouldn't be too crafty on the futon.

I love red wine......6 years after my CABG I developed atrial fibrillation and my cardiologist recommended due to the meds I was on that I cut alcohol completely as it could be a trigger for popping into afib.......14 months later, they just told me.....needed to raise my HDL......told me to start having 4oz of red wine......
no more no less......I sure do savor my 1/2 glass of red!!! Used to be my sips were probably 4oz LOL......now 4oz lasts me 2-3 hours I have been buying much better wine since at 4oz it's affordable!!!

My understanding is that drinking too much leads to fatty liver...if you're liver isn't given time to recover, it leads to scarring.

...so drinking too much everyday is bad.

Not sure what's worse between drinking a little bit too much everyday and WAY too much for two days though
