I was just notified that my employer is adding an additional $1040 surcharge to my health insurance if my wife can elect to have her own coverage but chooses mine instead. Seems to be becoming a popular thing these days. My question: Does anyone know if this is tax deductible?

That predates Obama. Seems like your employer trying to tax you, not the insurance company. I've had that issue since 05-06.

Initially it's on the honor system. However if they find out you lied, you can lose your insurance coverage, denied future insurance coverage, and/or terminated.

HR rep stated they could audit income tax returns and contact her employer as necessary. Use of the IRS databases was mentioned as well.

I'm not out to cheat anyone, but these "benefits" are getting to be not so "beneficial" anymore.

However if it's tax deductible by law...I'd like my due as the law provides.

I am almost positive it is not tax deductible unless you are paid with a 1099 and it doesn't sound like you are

I think all medical premiums can be put in a HSA or whatever you call it, thus it comes off your Net income, thus will effectively be tax deductible.

Probably won't be tax deductible as it will be deducted from your pay on a "Pre Tax" basis....
