Carry a loaded AK-47 around everywhere and point it at everyone suspicious

Yep. Now when I've had to visit my wife's family in Juarez that is a different story. I told her last time just let them come visit us. Hahah

Check out Cantina La Coyoacana. Went there with some friends when I was down there for a wedding last year.

I'll be there in 2 weeks as well. Don't be so paranoid. Just don't wear any fancy stuff to draw attention to yourself....ie. Mr. T Starter Kits, flamboyant gold chains, etc.

I dated a girl for 2 years who grew up in Mexico City and I spent plenty of time down there. Her family that lived there all had kidnapping insurance, and she got car-jacked in high school, during the day in a "good area" of Mexico City. None of them wore expensive clothes or jewelry out because they said it makes you a target.

It's probably not any worse than going to Chicago, but there are definitely risks. Just be smart and stay with groups whenever possible, the night life is actually pretty awesome if you can find a local you trust to take you out.

Lived there for 3 months. Great place to eat is La Hacienda de Los Morales. Very Upscale. If you want to venture in a very safe, nice part of Mex City, go to Polonco. We enjoyed one particular cuban type salsa bar called Barfly. Also, the mecca of all mariachi bands is called Garibaldi. Literally hundreds of Mariachi bands in the square there. Real cool experience. Have a good time.

.

Was in cancun in march and felt safe the whole time. We left our resort to eat lunch and dinner several times and never once did I feel unsafe. There are also federales with AR's that ride around and I think they keep the beach/resort area locked down pretty tight.

It's the pollution you should be concern about. Although it had been over tens years since I been there, the city is relatively safe, like most cities in the US, but the air is nasty polluted... my lungs hurt after a few days.

The only reason you should feel unsafe is if you're a young blonde Caucasian female...

To each their own but I wouldn't let that stop me from wearing my favorite piece of jewelry. And again people do this in what they would say are shady parts of Brooklyn.

Because this doesn't happen in any of America's bigger cities.

And if you really wanted to see a neat sight. You should've been there during the world cup.

As others have pointed out, the comments make it clear who has actually visited Mexico City. I have never felt unsafe, but I treat it like any big city. One solid piece of advice previously posted is to have the hotel call a cab vs. grabbing one on the street. If you have time, be sure to visit the Anthropology Museum...world class.
