quote:

Cellphone users around the country have for months reported a growing barrage of puzzling text messages from people who appear to have the wrong number. “Hey, what are you doing Monday?” a text might read. Or: “I have something to tell you.” The message could be even simpler: “I’m bored” or “Hello.”

quote:

authorities say, victims keep falling for this particular scheme — which combines aspects of romance and investment scams and is known as “pig butchering” because marks are fattened up before the kill.

quote:

They describe how a 68-year-old Santa Clara man identified only as “RB,” who had recently divorced and was struggling through financial problems, received a text message in February from a number he didn’t recognize.

quote:

When he responded, the stranger said her name was “Janey Lee,” that she was a Houston clothing designer, and that she had the wrong number. The trap had been set, and “Lee” kept the conversation going via text before moving it to more secure channels: WhatsApp and Telegram.

quote:

“RB and Lee discussed personal information: their backgrounds, relationship statuses, businesses, and finances,” wrote government attorneys Galen Phillips and Chris Kaltsas in a civil forfeiture complaint, which seeks to recoup some of the lost funds. “Within weeks, this budding relationship became romantic in nature, with Lee repeatedly messaging RB about their future together.”

quote:

Before long, Lee got to work. She (or perhaps he) shifted the conversation to her success in trading cryptocurrency. By March, she had convinced RB to invest, too, helping him to create an account on the well-known trading platform Crypto.com, where he bought digital currency and sent it to “XTRA,” which appeared to be another legitimate crypto exchange.
“Following the initial investment, RB was able to view his fictitious ‘earnings’ on the XTRA website, which reported a 20% to 30% gain against his initial investment,” prosecutors wrote.

quote:

By April 22, RB had invested $260,000 through eight deposits. At that point, his account showed a value of $487,000 — an 87% bonanza in a matter of weeks. Three days later, the divorcee tried to withdraw $100,000.
“Instead of receiving his withdrawal,” the government lawyers wrote, “RB received a message from XTRA customer service saying that by May 2, 2023, in order to verify his account, RB needed to send his XTRA account an additional amount worth approximately 20% of his account balance.”

quote:

Fearing he’d been taken, RB called the FBI, but there was only so much investigators could do at that point.

Full Story

Even at age 68, this man was still thinking with his dick, which makes pussy still undefeated.

And, I actually had something similar (text) like this a couple of weeks ago. A New York number "mistakenly" sent me a text message that was intended for her business partner to see what time we were going to play tennis tomorrow. Fast forward, her business partner somehow lived in Houston. I lost the first set, but ended up winning the match.

Had this happen before.

Immediate block if they respond after Scruffy says “wrong number”.

my go-to with these is to act like it's NOT a wrong number. like i'll get some random shite like "hey, is this Jimmy? we met last night at the bar" or something like that, and I always act like yes, this IS Jimmy....great to hear from you! they get very confused and try to convince me that I'm not actually who they originally said I was then eventually stop replying. it's the little things.

Old and lonely. Always check in on your elderly parents and grandparents.

I don’t respond to any calls I don’t know. If it is important, they will leave a message. I certainly don’t respond to a text message that certainly is not in my contact list or know my name.

I have received a lot of texts saying “ hey I found this number in my phone….” I immediately delete and report as junk.

They try to do this shite on social media too. I laugh but it is sad the older people fall for this.

One of the basic rules of life, "If it looks like it is too good to be true, it is."

I always get text from “real-estate” people asking if I’m interested in selling my house. I always tell them sure, 1.5 million…. I never get text from them again.

This is the last one I received. I’ve had 3 or 4 from ppl that want to strike up a conversation after I’ve told them that they have the wrong number.

You might say “what a dumb arse” but elderly people or those not as familiar with these scams are easy prey.

And you shouldn’t reply at all to the message even with a joke. That just lets them know they have a live number/responsive person to some extent and then you’re on even more lists.

There’s a subreddit where they post their conversations wasting these scammers’ time.

Man that’s a loooong game scam.

A friend of mine’s dad that is a dentist wired money for a boat he had never seen….Turns out to be a scam. Dumbass scammers left the money in the account and the police or fbi froze the account and he got it all back. Dumb as hell and lucky as hell.

I wasted a scammers time once for fun. Then I got about 10 calls a day from different numbers for the next few years. I guess he put my number in some file. Easier to just ignore the call.

I love texts and phone call scam attempts. I like to jack around with them.
