I'm sure there are a handful of Marines in here who spent many sleepless nights in the Swamps around Camp Lejeune.

Summer was the absolute worst. Too hot to get into a sleeping bag but if you didn't get in it the mosquitoes would murder you.

No, but I was at a landing early one morning before the sun came up to go fishing. The amount of mosquitoes I saw as the sun was coming up was like nothing I’d ever seen before. It was like a plague. Still makes my skin crawl thinking about it.

I never HAD to. I spent a few nights because I WANTED to.

There are ways to keep the little aggravating bastards off of you.

My son and I still laugh about it and I am kind of glad we shared the experience but it truly sucked at the time.

As much as it sucked, it created a memory with your son that he'll share with his kids.

Are you serious? Dude, we live in south Louisiana...sleeping out in the woods, swamp, etc. is a right of passage. Don't be 'fraid, try it!

yes. used to be a bit of an outlaw. had gotten dropped off at midnight once to hunt some property and had to stay on a ridge in the swamp all day until the next morning when i could get picked up without getting caught. we called this area the promised land lol. that was maybe 10 years ago, I've repented.

Know a buddy that missed the last pickup on the Whiskey Chitta river. Had to try and sleep in the water with just his mouth and nose sticking out. Mosquitoes still tore his arse up, kept choking on them. He said around midnight, somebody finally drove by on the bridge there and he was able to flag them down for a ride.

I had assumed the OP was talking about staying out in the swamp or marsh being unprepared to do so, like being stranded or something. Other than that, have camped in a tent out in the swamp plenty of times during the fall or spring for hunting or fishing purposes.

The marsh usually has millions of small mosquitoes. Swamp had big, crunchy ones, but not in huge numbers like the marsh.

I've spent many nights in the swamp without a tent. I don't really ever wear short pants though, and they don't bite my arms. Building a fire makes it much better. Buzzing my ears is the worst part.

Never had the pleasure of spending the night in a marsh, but they are just as bad during the day. I've been through plenty of places where they were so bad, you constantly breathe them in. No way I'm sleeping there. There are ways to leave a marsh most of the time

We didn’t have to but as teenagers, we used to camp out in the swamps west of Lake Faisse Point. Good times...

That’s brutal. When I was in the Maldives on my honeymoon our AC went out in our ocean villa for about 2 hours. So I kind of know what it’s like.

Catcher for rec ball. No aspirations of budding professionals. Just letting the boys play some baseball so they have a love for the game when they get older.

Ever slept in an adirondack shelter? Ever known many boys / young men to be responsible enough to bring mosquito repellent even if you told them to?

Suck it.

Spending a night in the marsh or in the swamp is not exactly a novel thing.
