Basically, company announced by next 5 years we will lay off 10%. What is the thing to do now? Finding a new job is hard since the industry is having a hard time. Skills that I have are a bit outdated compared to the latest trend (data analysis). What did the OT do when threatened or had been laid off?

Don't be in the bottom 10%. Bust your arse or go try to find a new job.

Start looking asap. I knew about 2 months in advance and it still took me 6+ to find something in my field.

Yes. March 2009.

Not a lot of other job opportunities to go around then either.

I was about 2 months ago. Got 6 weeks of severance but found a job in 1 week because my skills are in high demand, I did not have a backup plan. Previous company just made a ton of bad decisions and stopped making sales.

This.

I didn't look and i turned stuff down b/c i was "committed" to the company and project. I wanted to see it to the end. All that got me was laid off for 5 months and a cashed out 401k.

ETA: Part of my commitment was the company telling us we had more work coming

Yikes that's what I'm afraid of. Thankfully my wife makes enough for us to survive but really worried about my career

Worked for a startup in Wash DC that went belly up

Received an email at 11pm from the CEO, "As of this moment, we are all out of jobs"

I saw the writing on the wall and was able to have another job in hand when the layoffs struck during the period of my 2 weeks notice

I have additional experiences with struggling companies. My preference is to jump ship ASAP. I have a family to think about and do not want to risk their financial health for a company that could drop me at any moment

Twice in my career, and in hindsight I could have handled both much better, by seeing what was coming a long time before it happened, and by using that time to prepare (updating skills and looking for a new job).

2009. The only job listings at the time were in the medical field. If there was something, as an unskilled worker, your shot was pretty minimal at getting anything.competition was insane.

Plan ahead, as a matter of fact you should always have an updated resume and an eye to the job market in some regard.

I was working construction when the housing bubble burst. I was about to graduate with my undergrad anyway so they let me go. Then I got denied unemployment for being dumb enough to tell the truth when the case worker asked if I would quit school to take a job. It was my last semester, I wasn't going to quit to take a job, but that means you don't get unemployment apparently.

I married a teacher. I had 2 weeks of severance pay plus 2 weeks of vacation pay. It goes quickly. Thankfully, i only had to cash out the small 401k and it was a better safe than sorry deal. I had a job coming, i just didn't know how fast it would move

not from like a real job but ive only been doing that for like 9 months

i did an internship during the summer after my first year of college. was a company that put together running events and iron man challenges, that kind of stuff. i was intitially told that i would be helping them, on site, with the races and help it run and all of that. they then emailed me a week later telling me they decided to "change" my role to where i would be only part time but i would still be involved with the actual races. turns out that wasnt really the truth. i ended up coming in twice a week and spent the day on the computer doing stuff like facebook and twitter posts for their company. i probably should have taken it better, but i was pissed that i was kinda lied to so i didnt do the best job and was fired after about 5 or 6 weeks

My buddies and I were talking about layoffs the other day.

Heard a story about one guy being told he would survive a round of layoffs only to be let go 2 weeks later in a second round.

Had he been let go in the first round, he would have received 3 months severance. The second round did not receive anything

Companies are cold blooded

I know a little bit about this.

I really think our sales guy spent his time in his office jacking off all day. When our big project tanked (investors pulled out) we literally had NOTHING behind it.

They always do that. They've got to keep morale up for the work that's still in progress, yet about to end.

Never have. Am nearing full retirement so I don't think much about such things, use to. Best of wishes and do not place all of your eggs in one basket.
