When I was a younger Dupont, I'd try to help them out. Some of my favorite BR bumbass gimmicks:
1. I'm out of gas. I need $5 to get to XX for my sisters in law.
2. Raising money for church/sport camp selling hocked Candy from Sams.
When I was in BR years ago I only ever saw them at the North Gates at LSU and the citiplace/bluebonnet intersection. Shame to hear they've spread.

Old lady like this at College. Probably late 70's. Gave her 5 bucks. Lady that age shouldn't have to do that.
Got out of my truck to adjust a mirror in Hammond Aire parking lot, guy walks up and says excuse me sir but you wouldn't help a guy out would you? I said nope.
Guy asking like that will never make a good bum.

Years ago when begging wasn't such an epidemic, I'd often give them a bottle of water or coke on a hot day. A dollar or so if the guy was clearly bad off. Like if an amputee is sitting there in the sun, I'd give money.
Now I never give anything or acknowledge their humanity. It's gotten so ridiculous. There are government programs we all pay for to help these people.

They are getting lazier
The last exit before heading into Illanoy, there is a guy who panhandles, and now, he sits under the overpass in the shade, with a sign pointing to wear he is and where to drop the cash. o lol'd at first, but then thought, what a lazy arse, u gotta work the free shite man.
But no one has panhandlers like f'in Florida. It's like almost every overpass there are 4-5 of them, with one taking turns for the cash while others drink, smoke, sleep.

Had a black guy call me racist because I ignored him when he said hey to me while I was walking into the gas station. I told him I thought he was going to ask me for money like the other people loitering were. He started yelling at the other guys.

In Lafayette corner of Ambassador and Kaliste Saloom I saw a Mexican couple with 2 girls around 10 years old in front of the donut place asking drivers for money. It's sad, but what do you do with them?

I exited I10 on College a month ago and there was this greasy looking toothless old black guy panhandling. He tried to get me to make eye contact with him and I wasn't interested.
He got pissed and got in front of my car, pulled his greasy/dirty sweat pants down and slapped his arse at me.
Sure he did
Well, it must have been you then!
Wear your OT name tag next time and I'll give you some spare change.

Had a guy roll up on me while I was dropping off mail at the Bennington post office
Had the exact same thing happen to me at the gas station at Bennington and College. I had the same response since I was caught off guard as well. Probably the same guy.
Something about needing to get to Mississippi was his excuse?

These assholes have some audacity.
There are way too many "help wanted" signs around BR for me to donate to their cause. I used to give to them - but cut it out once the economy turned around a couple years ago.

I have always wanted to get some counterfeit bills and give them out to these characters and see if they end up in the police report. I feel like I could thin a few of them out.

I've given money exactly once. An older dude asked me for money for gas. I was turning him down then he told me he was a Vietnam Vet in town for treatment. And then he lifted his pants to show me what the landmine had done. No faking that. And we had a VA hospital in town. And his car was at the pump. So I filled his tank and gave him another $20 for a meal. The dude was a mess but I'd be shocked if he was faking the scars.
I hope the fakers rot in hell for making it harder to give to people who are legitimate. They are rare but they are out there.

No idea I didn't let him get that far.

Crazy stuff legged guy was just rolling his wheelchair down the dead center of college in rush hour traffic yelling "y'all are fricking pieces of shite, you're all gonna fricking die". Dudes on some crazy shite I guess.

Some ol funky bitch followed me out as I was exiting racetrac saying "sir do you have 81 cents?" I just kept walking as if I was deaf

Do like I do. If someone in a car asks me for gas money, I tell them I won't just give them money, but I'll buy something from them. Everybody has something in their car worth a couple of bucks. I've bought a nice roadside emergency kit, jumper cables.
Last time a dude in a Jeep Cherokee asked me for money for gas, I told him I'd buy something from him. He said he didn't have anything to sell, and I said, "What about that radio (he had an aftermarket single DIN)?" He says, "I'm not selling my radio." I said, "Well I guess you don't need the money bad enough" and continued pumping my gas.

You all are going about it the wrong way. Don't ignore them. As soon as I see them I eyeball them, walk right up to them and tell them I left my wallet at my job and ask if I could borrow $5. Then I shut up, stand there and watch what they have to say.

The wheelchair frick really needs to just be locked up somewhere. He's such a nasty pain in the arse.

With the combination of the flood, the new mayor and the population that is living in BR, I don't predict very good things here in the upcoming years. It's sad.
