Has anyone in the OT ever taken a trip by rail across the U.S.?

I've been thinking about booking a trip. Anyone in the OT have any advice or recommendations? The reason I would be traveling by rail is to see the country.

I think he got called out for being a fraud for some train related stuff, not sure.
I took a train from Cleveland to Boston for a wedding over 2 decades ago. It was fine, went with a whole bunch of family. I don't have much insight for yah, I was 5.

It's expensive. I looked at booking two from San Antonio to LA with a small sleeper (smallest one up from just two seats) and it cost more than airfair and rental car in CA for a week and took 2 or 3 days to get there.

It's stupid expensive and a lot of the best options of going cross country from the south to some of the places I wanted to go all involved going northeast first or flying to somewhere like Chicago first. I have been wanting to catch it down from Atlanta or Birmingham and ride down to New Orleans for awhile, but the price just sucks.
I have done some riding the rails in Alaska and it was a blast.

I've done a hot rail before if that helps

I wouldn't recommend it. Take the train across Australia instead. Or Europe.
I recommend the Ghan, from Adelaide to Darwin via Alice Springs.

expensive, equipment is old , old rails, lots of stops, people board with ice chest
trust me you are not going to like it- the brochures are not a true representation-
There may be short excursions that are not nice but after my experience NO NO and again NO

Being stuck on the train between DC and NY or a weekly basis is enough Amtrak for me. Amtrak sucks.

I did the Eurail in Europe and really enjoyed it. I feel bad because I haven't even seen as much of my own country as I did Europe. It's a shame that we don't have any better options for rail travel in the U.S. Europeans use the Eurail system all the time.

America has the shittiest infastracute from roads to rails of all developed countries.

Yet we can afford to send illegals kids to school and to feed them.....but I'll save that for the poli board

Half way, Kansas City to Los Angeles. In 1967. Not bad. I'd do it again in 1967.

Typical opinion arrived at without any real thought. "Developed countries" usually means Europe. Their distances are very short. In the US flying makes more sense. It's good to see that the Eurotrash have finally gotten behind this too. There is zero reason to emulate them in the U.S. for transportation.

China also uses a rail system that spans just about the entire country

I did Slidell to Washington DC and back. 22 hours there and 25 hours back. Was a school trip without a sleeping cart... Was miserable once it was time to go to sleep.

I rode from Hammond to Memphis and back one time because I couldn't drive. I got a minor in possession of alcohol charge when I was 19 and in Arkansas they suspend your driver's license for 3 months, so I had to go by train to go home from college. I had to skip a week's worth of class too because I had to take some classes that they give to people with DWI's before I could get my license reinstated. They only offered the course like 4 times a year, so there really was no flexibility.

Yes
My kids and I left out of Nola on The City of New Orleans and traveled north to Chicago, spent a few days there, took the California Zepher through the Rockies, crossed the continental devide, and got off the train in San fran. A friend picked me up and let us borrow his old 1973 fj-55 land cruiser and we traveled up the coast to Washington, camping and staying in hotels along the way.. We returned to San Fran and took a train south and then east all the way back to Nola (kinda boring). The Chicago to San Fran is the best, by far. Epic trip for us. We were very fortunate to be able to make such a long adventure.
Amtrak isn't cheap and it isn't that nice, but you see things you couldn't see by road and you don't have to drive. Sit back and enjoy cocktails around the U.S.
Edit: we had a sleeping car and you can byob. The Chicago to San Fran is beautiful and anyone would like that trip IMO.

In 1963 took Southern RR trip from NOLA to NYC. it was an amazing experience for me, at 14 yrs old. Pure magic and luxury.
In 1985 took RR trip from Iowa to Chicago to NOLA, round-trip. This time with my wife and 3 young children. The magic was in my kids' sense of awe and wonder. The ride was rough, the rails were old, Amtrack was not very luxurious.
In 2013, i took the Bullet Train from Kyoto, Japan to Osaka. The magic was back! That is one great way to travel and see the countryside. And it's fast!
