quote:

For the first time in the shrimp industry’s century-old history, governments of five of Texas’ coastal counties—Galveston, Matagorda, Calhoun, Chambers, and Jefferson–have issued shrimp disaster declarations or resolutions, publicly pleading for help. Counties and parishes in the seven other southern shrimping states have also declared shrimp disasters.

In 1985, Americans ate 2 pounds of shrimp per person and 90 percent of that shrimp was caught in the United States. By 2021, Americans were consuming nearly three times as many shrimp—an average of 5.9 pounds per person per year, according to the National Fisheries Institute. But 94 percent of that shrimp is imported.

South Asian seafood, especially farmed seafood, is disgusting and damn near dangerous.

I don’t know how to stop this though outside of import restrictions or excessive tariffs, neither of which I like.

Looks like the globoschlomo regime doing what it does to every coastal town, the CCC cycle:

Chaos
Clearcutting
Condominiums

This. Also I don’t buy/eat anything from a restaurant that says “fried fish” and doesn’t specify what species it is.

let me guess, they want more regulations on imports forcing the consumer to pay more.

I am tired of subsidizing businesses. If the Government cared about small and local businesses they would not enforce so many taxes and penalties on the business. They should offer incentives to the business instead of punishing imports and forcing the higher cost onto consumers.

For me, that goes also for any other bottom feeder fish or crustacean.

NC Sound shrimp is good but pretty expensive compared to Gulf Shrimp.

If the state doesn’t touch the Gulf, I’m not eating seafood from there

When you’re competing against subsidized businesses, that is your only option.

This country has only two options for a future: communism or nationalist socialism. Deny it all you want but we will settle on one of those choices. Best we can do is push for the latter.

Similar. I won't eat any imported shrimp, but it's very difficult to find domestic shrimp in landlocked states. I usually have to wait until Whole Foods gets some. Publix and Kroger do not ever have domestic shrimp.

We were in the middle of the desert in Torreón Mexico and my friend ordered the octopus. I was like I wouldn't order seafood in the desert plus the beef in that area is always prime. He ate it up with no problems, though.

Same here. I showed the wife where to look on the frozen packages to see where the shrimp or fish was caught. She doesn’t get the imported shite anymore.

Nope, everyone is gonna learn to repair robots. We'll be a country of 300 million robot repairers, 400 CEOs, and the CEOs will get to keep all the profit because they own the robots.

Gulf Coast fishermen crying about imports is rich considering they were all shipping their crabs to Maryland a few years ago. frick those crybabies.
The govt should get out of the way and let the open market work it’s magic.

Only works if the country were to operate like the EU with states or regions having autonomy to enact legislation and social programs that make the most sense for that region.

That's silly. Some of us will walk on treadmills to generate power for the robots.

Shrimping with drag nets destroys the marsh, muddies the water, and kills billions of juvenile fish as bycatch.

frick em. I hope most of them go out of business. It would be way better for the long term health of the economy and environment of S Louisiana
