Have them awesome dudes do something exceptional. They are amazingly loyal and resilient.
But, let the avg dudes cover the symbolic chit.

Those guys often go on to other high speed assignments. They don't spend their entire career there. It's a huge honor and responsibility. Someone who succeeds there will succeed elsewhere.

When the weather is really cold, they cut down the length of time each sentinel stands watch, but at least one of the Old Guard is out there 24/7.
If you ever have the opportunity to see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns, it's well worth your time. It's all spit, polish and precision. Very impressive.
