Get a shot and take 2 colchicine tablets. Wait one hour take one more colchicine. Drink lots of water. Poof it's gone. Also avoid shrimp, tuna, processed meats, red meats, alcohol (mostly beer) and orange juice. Eat chicken and carbs. Drink lots of water. My first flare up was around 30 so not an old man's diesease, but be careful some daily meds wreak havoc on the kidneys. Diet plays the biggest part. FWIW

Granny Smith apples helped my gout. I was actually allergic to the Allopurinol and it made me break out like I had chicken pox.

I have had about one flare up per year since I was 25. My dad gets it, my brother gets it and my grandmother would get it. First time it ever flared up I had eaten prime rib at a wedding reception. That night the pain was excruciating and though I had broken my toe. I toughed it out without any medications and the pain finally went away after about three weeks. I had another flare up about a year later and went to the doctor and asked him to cut my toe off because it couldn't hurt worse, he laughed and told me it would just flare up at the next joint up. Luckily I don't have flare ups that often so when I feel that twinge, I go to the doctor the get the steroid pack and the meds. I drink beer in moderation and do not eat a lot of seafood, and frick prime rib it seems to be the main cause of my first few flare ups so I stay away now.

Seafood doesn't tend to bother me, but I also don't eat a lot of it just by nature of where I live. I am sure if I lived somewhere where it was more readily available, then it might cause some issues.

How bout not eating inflammatory foods

Quit the beer, wine is fine, but I'd quit alcohol all together out the gate

Article on what gout is

Gout forms because of inflammation and the body's inability to remove said inflammation. Eating steak, shrimp, tuna, chicken isn't causing the gout. It is the breading on the fried shrimp, the bread for the poboy, the potatoes with the steak, the sugar in the orange juice.

A random quote...
quote:

probably the truth is that fructose causes insulin resistance, which causes gout

Does Fructose Increase Uric Acid?

quote:

Sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) are consistently associated with gout in observational studies. The fructose component of sucrose/HFCS is thought to be responsible for this by directly increasing uric acid production. The proposed mechanism is as follows:

I'm still looking for my trigger....

I don't ever drink soft drinks, eat beef maybe once a month, I rarely eat shrimp, keep my bread intake very low, don't drink OJ, take cherry pills daily, drink apple cider vinegar, drink gallons of water each day, no longer eat tuna fish or asparagus.

I was drinking beer every weekend, so maybe that is it.
