I was diagnosed a few months ago. Brother has it too. Extremely painful.

Has does anyone else deal with this? Specific Rx regimens that work?

Alcohol + diet + bad genetics, go to your doc and get a script of allupurinol or whatever is better these days.

I heard it sucks.

gout is painful as hell...the only thing I can think of that is worse is a kidney stone. I had gout so bad a while back, that I couldn't sleep with a ceiling fan on.

I had a few attacks and finally started on a regular dose of allopurinol, which has basically eliminated my attacks.

bad thing is, I used to get it any time I ate or drank anything good (i.e. whiskey, steak, seafood, etc.).

Steroid injection into the joint. Or take Medrol dose pack as soon as you feel anything if ok for u to take steroids. Colchicine sometimes helped, sometimes didn't. My body didn't like Indomethacin.

And drink tart or black cherry juice with plenty of water.

If u have frequent attacks, they will put u on Allopurinol. But Allopurinol is a preventative. It doesn't do any good in the middle of an attack.

Uric acid literally crystalizes in your joints - typically your big toe, ankle, knee, wrist or elbows. It swells and is painful to the touch...the weight of a bed sheet will not allow you to sleep.

I am on Colchicine for attacks and have been prescribed Allopurinol for daily but until I can get this current attack under control, I cannot start the Allopurinol. Vicious circle.

Gout isn't an old person disease, by the way. I know several guys in the 30s with it.

Excess uric acid forms crystals in your joints and is like arthritis pain X a whole bunch, in your big toe usually.

Gout forms crystals in your joints. Usually big toe, other places in hands, feet, some in elbows, knees. Crystals also form in kidneys. The crystals just sit there and hang out. When they get activated from either uric acid being too high or trauma to the affected joint, the inflammatory cells come in to join the party. That is what causes all the swelling and pain.

So when you are flaring, you have to get some type of anti-inflammatory in you.

When you are not flaring you can take a preventative medicine like Allopurinol to stop the crystals from forming. If the crystals aren't hanging out in the joints the less problems u will have.

I had it start in my foot. Flared there a few times.

It moved to my ankle for several flare ups. That was intolerable. I went to the ER yelling for them to just cut the damn thing off.

They put me on Alipurinol. At first it didnt work. They increased the dosage and I went and ate long john silvers. I had a bad flare up in my neck. Like I am talking about my spine. I couldn't move my head. I had to take pain pills like crazy just to tolerate being awake. IT IS frickING HELL

ETA: Haven't had a flare up in like 6 years. Meat was my issue

ETAA: Hit me at 28/29
