Article about how fast the technology is advancing. Sounds great until you read last paragraphs.

quote:

The big splash will not be personal vehicles, but rather the loss of millions of long-haul truck jobs and short-haul taxi jobs to automation.

Those jobs will vanish by 2025 at the latest. Something between 2020 and 2022 seems more likely, and even 2020 would not be much of a surprise given the speed of announcements.

I doubt it. They'll have too many lawsuits.

Why not? Once someone like Ford enters the market change will happen rapidly.

There is no way this will happen. Forget about all the legal liability issues, and ask yourself why the hell anyone would buy a vehicle that doesn't allow you to go over the speed limit.

Because you don't have to drive.

Did you honestly just ask the appeal of driverless cars?

I think the timeline is more like 20 years but I am OK with this. Those people will have to train themselves in some other skillset. This is basic economics.

The timeline isn't very feasible but there is a reason why Google bought all those robotics companies.

Not really, we're entering into a new territory that current economic models aren't built for. There's not going to be enough productive jobs for people to do. It's gonna be a whole new world soon and we're all gonna be poets or hedge fund managers not really contributing shite but doing our damnedest to convince ourselves and others that we serve a purpose.

Personally I'm looking forward to it.

This is going to happen as there are too many big business forces pushing for it. The insurance industry is 100% in favor of this as it will substantially decrease the number of automobile accidents (deaths & injuries) across the US.

The personal injury attorneys I've spoke too all believe the the cottage automobile personal injury cases will decrease by as much as 80%. I wouldn't want to be going into law school thinking I'm going to bank big bucks on this segment of law in the future.

There is no way the American consumer will choose to get around slower in a driverless car over getting around faster in a regular car. I just don't see it. It's science fiction imo.

I bet the large freight company execs are drooling over getting this technology implemented. Fund managers probably wanting in on the action too.
