Recently finished this search myself (although I was looking for a more family friendly area). Houston has several places I was very interested in living, but it's not as simple as that. The price, commute, property tax if you buy are all overwhelming. Each person's specific scenario really decides what the best option is.

apts inside the loop (which covers most cool places listed above) in the new high rises are over a grand for 1 br ... you'll have to look very, very hard for duplexes in the montrose area, which might be under a grand but are old and cramped ... an apt in the galleria area will also be a thousand, most probably ...

I swear I saw you saying you make like 30k now in a recent thread. Your salary is getting doubled? Are you just graduating or something?

I love living in Seabrook. I'm also looking to move further south though. Towards Bacliff or San Leon.

We have a yard about 5 miles from there, it's a pretty rough area.

This.

But be prepared to spend a grand a month at a new, "luxury" complex. There are pretty much no vacancies in Houston right now. There's an oil boom and Exxon is ramping up their GIGANTIC new HQ office complex.

Treat Houston like a big circle. Then, starting with downtown, chop off the whole eastern half of the circle. You only want to live the the western hemisphere. Of the western hemisphere, pretty much the central corridor is desirable. Go too far N or S and it's pure ghetto. Even the desirable central west corridor is neighborhood by neighborhood. The level of "coolness" of your address is determined by which LOOP you live inside. Inside The 610 Loop or ITL, you are the coolest. Inside the Beltway is just OK. Outside the Beltway you are a suburbanite. Houston is a city full of islands of prosperity and good people amid and surrounded by a sea of shite. You have to choose wisely.

Where do you find an apartment in any decent area for $1k per month anywhere close to town? I didn't look to rent long, but for a 2 bedroom in any area worth staying, you were looking at $1600 for a two bedroom bare minimum. About $1350 for a single, again not top of the line by any means. We were looking for 3 bedrooms and couldn't find a lot under 2k unless you went out to like Katy. And if I'm living out there, I'm just buying a house.
