Man, get sleep while you can. Wife went through labor all night and started pushing at 8 a.m. Wish I would have slept more that night, because I was up the entire next night to let the wife rest. And there's no time to sleep during the day, because people were in your room the entire time.
I ran home to shower and pick up clothes after the second night and woke up 4 hours later on the sofa. I had passed the eff out. I felt so bad leaving my wife at the hospital. I didn't even mean to fall asleep.
Depends on the baby, but be prepared for no sleep for a while. It's worth it though. I've got a 7 month old. Around 4 months, he went from a terror to deal with at night to sleeping pretty much all night. It's easy after that. We did shift work for the first 4 months though and rarely slept in the same bed.

Congrats, but it's a much longer night for her unless you are doing the whole labor and delivering part. You aren't doin' shite.

Another thing to keep in mind....
Everyone is gonna want to visit mom and baby in the hospital. If mom really isn't feeling well, don't be afraid to turn visitors away from visiting at that moment. Many times moms and dads will not want to say anything and think they are being rude to family/friends. Get her nurse involved if need be. It's our job to make sure mom gets enough rest, we don't mind being the "mean nurse" and politely asking visitors to leave so she can rest and you and her don't feel like you have offended anyone. They can always visit once you guys are settled at home with baby.

I did this accidentally. My dad works in the hospital, so he'd always pop in at weird times while we were trying to sleep. I told them that I wish visitors hours weren't just open all day, because you couldn't find a good time to just sleep. Pissed off the MIL apparently and she stormed out. I felt bad, and apologized. It's not that we didn't want people there, but not everyone realizes that the baby doesn't allow you to sleep at night all the time. You may be interrupting sleep time at 2 in the afternoon.

another tip that I'm sure nurse will agree with
let the nurses take your new daughter for a few hours every night so you can both get some sleep
it doesn't make you bad parents
we would let the nurses take our daughter for 4 hours each night so we both could get some rest
use the nurses while you can because once you get home, they won't be there anymore

When people did that with mine, I just went and took a nasty shite in the bathroom.
They left quickly.

People just assume you guys want everyone there. And really.....that is up to yall. Some people want everyone visiting. Some would rather keep them to a minimum. I can remember checking a mom's episiotomy site(when I was a mother/baby nurse) and there was like 15 people (and small children and male teenagers)in the room and they didn't even offer to leave while I examined mom and she didn't tell them to leave. Patient's brother in law jokingly tells me "I filmed the delivery....she don't need to be shy now" (ewwwwwwwwwww)
I think people just get so excited about the baby they just don't think about the mom needing the rest.

This is really gonna depend on the hospital. Some don't have this option anymore and baby is with you the entire time (only exception is if mom is really sick....then baby is admitted to NICU).
But yes....if your hospital lets you send baby to the nursery for the night....DO IT. Get sleep while you can. Promise you one night of baby getting a bottle won't hurt breastfeeding. Or you can have them bring baby back throughout the night for feedings.
