I feel like gas appliances (ovens/dryers/etc.) aren't very common in the South. Is there a reason most homes don't have gas lines, or is this a changing statistic?
Pretty much everyone in my neighborhood has gas appliances.

Induction is the new gas.

Around the 1970's most homes were going "all-electric". Two of my rental houses were built then and neither has gas service.
yep, there was some concern during that time period that we were going to run out of natural gas and that talk drove the price of gas up...of course, electric companys capaitalized and promoted "all electric"....
today, due to the shale gas production, gas is very cheap and is really the way to go...even seeing it used to power large fleet vehicles like garbage trucks here in MS....

I'm not sure.
Cooking on anything other than open flame is an exercise in frustration.

Most gas furnaces require electricity to run the fan/blower.
Exactly, that's why I have a stand alone unit with the ODV in the shop just in case.

My home has gas. As does every house in my neighborhood. Most older homes will.
Same here. Have always heated the water and the home with natural gas. Much cheaper in wintertime than electricity.

They are very common in South Louisiana where gas is cheap.
Depends mostly on the service people have ran to their homes. Usually when people didn't have gas service they would use electric.
The baller ovens are hybrid. Electric elements and gas burners.

On a side note--I heated the pool for about a 90 hour stretch to 103 degrees this past January (when it was cold as nuts outside)…then the Atmos bill came
I used my solar panels (water, not elec) and a bubble blanket to get my pool to 101 - no added bill.

I've had gas in every house I've ever lived in and I'm in my 50's. Always can cook and have a hot cup off coffee when a hurricane blows through.
Gulf States Utilities used to give you the electric hot water heater and install it if you would switch. frick that. Gas even back in the 60's 70's was cheaper.
