I went to school before all that fake and soybean crap hit the schools. Our lunch was always made with fresh ingredients and everything was cooked in the school cafeteria. Food wasn't made at one school and shipped to other schools. We never heard of anything called free lunch. We didn't have pizza or hamburgers with the fake grill marks on them. We only had white milk to drink for lunch. After you ate lunch you could go to the candy place to buy candy or a soft serve vanilla ice cream cone. On Fridays we always had some type of seafood such as tuna fish fish sticks or some awful dish that was made with tomato sauce with chunks of fish in it that was served over rice. I really never was hyped up on Fridays because I didn't like what was served except for the tuna. I didn't like that fish dish at all. Our cafeteria had the best bread pudding that you ever tasted.

I know it was basically square cardboard topped with plastic cheese, but I’ll be damned if I don’t have cravings for that shite on occasion. Pizza day was the best day; the one day where I’d tell my mom I wanted to eat cafeteria food.

Paradis grade school in 1959, Friday lunch was fish sticks and a block of cooked solidified grits.

When I was in school I used to love Fridays especially during Mardi Gras. We would have either fried fish, seafood gumbo or something else, they never served meat on Friday, this was public school, I am not sure if they still do this, but looking back... We used to get a pretty good meal for.. I think $0.65? I just remember I would get $4 a week and at the end of the week I had enough to get something from the vending machine.

When I think back to how much I liked the mashed potatoes and cheese in a slice of fried baloney, I hang my head in shame. But those yeast rolls, square pizza and lent fish were the shite.

We got fish sticks, at public schools. But they were good, no complaints. Still prefer fish on Friday.

There was regular pizza day and Mexican pizza day. The latter was the GOAT of school lunches.
Agreeed, stop sign pizza was superior

I can still picture the crates packed with milk bags at the checkout.

Never liked the rectangle pizza. It was a far cry from Papa John's, which is what my family used to order frequently back then

I remember when they started using those and they had to teach us how to put the straw in. Do they still use these?

Welsh had a legit gumbo. Sugar glazed rolls were worth stealing. Brisket rice and gravy was the tits too.

I believe that the closest you can come nowadays to the old school cafeteria pizza is Totinos. Not just because of the shape, but because it has a close enough, but not quite the same taste.
