Except, you know, not really.

It's hard to be at war with an ideology.

Want to know what a war will look like? France starts to deport every non-citizen Muslim, creates internment camps for known radical Muslims in France (including anyone who has ever protested for Muslim causes), makes it a crime to wear traditional Muslim clothing, and secures it's borders.

Anything less than that, plus a whole lot more militarization, is not really being at war. Not really. And all of the half measures that are actually taken will be of no consequence.

I'm not advocating for those actions to be taken. I'm just saying that to declare war on an ideology is pretty meaningless unless you go totalitarian.

It sounds like the U.S. circa 1942. And every other allied nation. And we weren't fighting an ideology.

It sounds like Bosnia circa 1990.

It sounds like the U.S., North and South, during the Civil War.

It sounds like Rome during most of it's empire.

It sounds like the 100 years War between France and England.

It sounds like war. That is war. There are other details that make war more or less revolting to look at and to deal with, but war is bad. Individual rights are superseded by group dynamics and the need to preserve an ideology or culture.

Calling that Nazism is simplistic and distracting.
