You won't get hooked on them for something temporary like your injury. Addiction comes about when one begins to use them for no reason and then relies on them for a certain sensation.

Rate your pain now out of 10. Pick a number that's too uncomfortable to sit through. For most people, it's in the 6-8 range, probably. When your pain is, we'll just call it "7" out of 10, and you're up for a pain med in terms of time since the last one, go ahead and take one. If 4-6 hours later, you're at a cool "4" and it's not all that bad, don't take it, but also know that you don't have to wait another 4-6h to re-evaluate your pain from that point. If an hour after that it begins throbbing and hits an 8, knock it on back down.
Many others will tell you that just taking it around the clock (as written on the bottle) is a better option, because sometimes it's hard to make a 7-8 not hurt anymore, and being on the med before it throbs like that will help you. If you're worried about your own tendency to abuse meds, the top option should give you some peace of mind, and will probably control your pain just fine.

Wait...there's two Dr. Friday's at the clinic? How weird is that? Which Friday is better?

Doc gives good advice. Once the pain gets ahead and you are playing catchup with the meds, it sucks. Ice the area throughout the day. Helps a ton. Rehab nurse of 20 years. Seen tons of people with broken shite.

Taking pain medication but about to run out. Was hoping to meet other Dr Friday. Injury happened Sunday. Will go back to Dr on monday
---------------------------------------------------------------
This chronology is confusing to me. Orthopods regularly see patients on short notice: a day or two, MAYBE three, after your ER visit, you should be in the orthopedist's office. That's why the ER doc just prescribed a few days of pain meds. There's got to be more to this story...
But in the interim, ice is your friend. Or, at least it is in the day or two after injury. I don't know the implications after 6 or 7 days. Good luck.

quote:As my wife, who is a nurse, told her patient, who came in with a separated shoulder and happened to be one of my work colleagues, when he wouldn't take his pain meds on her advice, but had to wait till his doctor personally told him it was okay, "Well, than feel free to just sit there and hurt (dumbass)." The dumbass part was silent. Have to be sensitive to the dumbass subset.
So you'd rather be in pain that take the prescribed pain meds?
