French Formula One driver Jules Bianchi died early Saturday from head injuries sustained in a crash at last year's Japanese Grand Prix.

The Bianchi family issued a statement, which was posted on his official Twitter feed and later confirmed by the Manor F1 team.

Bianchi, 25, had been in a coma since the Oct. 5 accident, in which he collided at high speed with a mobile crane that was being used to pick up another crashed car.

"Jules fought right to the very end, as he always did, but today his battle came to an end," the family said in its statement. "The pain we feel is immense and indescribable."

Bianchi competed in 34 races over the 2013 and 2014 seasons, scoring the first ever championship points for Manor -- then known as Marussia -- by finishing ninth at last year's Monaco Grand Prix.

The Manor team tweeted: "We are devastated to lose Jules after such a hard-fought battle. It was a privilege to have him race for our team."

Bianchi is the first driver to die of injuries sustained in an F1 race since three-time world champion Ayrton Senna was killed at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

It's been 21 years since that dark weekend in Imola in 1994 when both Senna and Ratzenberger died on track after horrific crashes on consecutive days. The safety strides that F1 has made since Senna's death has been incredible and drivers have since walked away from some insane crashes. Unfortunately in Bianchi's case, when he spun off the track in wet conditions in Japan last year he slammed his head into a crane and the car didn't even get a chance to absorb the impact. RIP Jules.

Yeh it's a bad deal. Complete freak accident to crash into a crane that was removing a car that had already crashed and then hit the one spot that you weren't protected. This is one that wasn't preventable unlike most of the other deaths in NASCAR and IRL.

I'm amazed that he didn't die instantly from that impact.

In a coma since october? Damn, I hope he ended up being a donor so some good could come out of this tragedy.

Saw the story on CNN last night. Very sad, he never woke up from the coma he was in. That race was hours before a massive typhoon made landfall in Japan. How could they have ever thought it was a good idea to continue with the race? That would have been like them holding a similar event here in the U.S. with a category 4 hurricane coming at ya and gonna make landfall soon.

Those cars usually have no problem running in the rain. It actually plays in to the strategy. Not saying this was a good idea to run the race, but there has been little controversy about the decision.

I think it was a Cat 2 at the time of the race, or maybe when it passed over Sazuka, but that was many hours later.

Bianca will never be blamed for the wreck, but speed combined with the heavy rain on that corner was a recipe for disaster. FIA will probably always regret not red flagging it when that last heavy rain came through.

Gotcha. The CNN clip did say they normally still race in the rain but they did slant the story to make it seem like they really should have stopped the race. They did say that the incident prompted a massive investigation so maybe that will help protect racers in the future.

Just so very sad for the family. Imagine hanging on to hope since October that your loved one will come out of the coma and they don't.

No doubt. Especially with him being halfway around the world when this happened and he really did have a promising career ahead of him.

The freakness of the accident is astounding. 18" to the left or right and he likely walks away. Using a crane instead of a tractor and there is no problem.

This sport has become incredibly safe, to the point it is now boring because of the limits. Fortunately they are still improving safety while bringing back the competition.

Terribly sad. First F1 race day fatality since Senna in 1994.

Damn, hate to hear this but thanks for sharing the story. I wouldn't have known about it otherwise for another few days or so.

They should have moved the race up a few hours. It was low light conditions and heavy rain coming. That's where they messed up bad.

Makes me wonder how Michael Schumacher is doing now too.

I thought of him as well. Bad deal for him, too, esp. after retirement.

Complete secrecy around his situation. There have been a few leaks here and there, but it seems like he will forever be impaired.

There were reports he was aware of his situation and surrounding, but still in and out of a coma.

Reminds me of Ariel Sharon, Israeli PM. Didn't even know Sharon died last year until a couple of months ago.

Yeah, that's what I hear about him too. Just would like more updates especially if there's any progress. Heard his son is doing well in lower classes of racing.
