I'd enlist in the Navy pretty much immediately if that were possible, but I take Xanax (prescription) and that means if I got cleared by my doctor to not take them and had no anxiety disorder, I'd still, if I remember right, have to wait another 3 years before I could enlist.

I'd be 28, and frick starting a military career that late.

So are we supposed to let in drug addicts or fat people? Or both?

If we want the best tech talent, apparently so.

Yeah, it's pretty goddamn hard to find someone with excellent technical computer skills that is both physically fit and drug free.

Especially when they can make huge money in the private sector, living their preferred lifestyle.

I've been in the infantry 15 years and I'm all for it if it gets the mission accomplished. Cyber warfare is the wave of the future. If that's where the best people are then go get them. And I think a lot of senior officers would be too.

The big problem won't be getting the military to accept them, it's the fricking lawyers. There is just so much liability that comes with taking on someone who does drugs. No one wants to answer for some guys mistake when it's found out he had drugs in his system. The real problem is the government's zero defect and risk averse attitude. To a beauracrat, risk management takes precedent over mission accomplishment.

It's definitely a complicated issue. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

A THC breathalyzer would probably go a long way to help them figure it all out.

And then there's the issue of young fatties on the "normal" enlisted side of things...

What they need to do is offer a way in to certain cube fields to people who are already qualified to do the job. They wouldn't need to meet the stringent requirements of a combat soldier. Just send them to a 2 or 3 week military indoctrination course and make them warrant officers.

The real problem is getting these kids security clearances though. That process would need to be tweaked.

It's also the fact that fatties cost the military more with their health problems. If they'd just PT the shite out of them a few extra weeks before and after BCT.

Govt should re-institute compulsory military service and the pork chop platoon.

Good idea.

relax a lot of the rules

Not so good.

If they're going to do that, they might as well just make them all civilian contractor jobs.

Many don’t think this goes far enough. Tim Kane, a former Air Force officer whose 2011 Atlantic article “Why Our Best Officers are Leaving” ignited a firestorm of controversy, has suggested radical reforms. Discussing his book Bleeding Talent with TIME in 2013, Kane summarized his ideas into three buckets. First, individual commands should have hiring authority, not today’s centralized bureaucracy. Second, the performance evaluation system should be completely overhauled. Third, individuals should be able, even encouraged, to enter and exit the military multiple times.

Interesting ideas.

IIRC a lot of recruits are disqualified because they take ADD/ADHD medication.

The Corps won't take you until you've been off of it a full year.

Why would anyone work for the military when they could go to Google or Facebook or any of the big tech companies in California?

There's no issue with recruitment right now. With the cutbacks in the defense department, the branches can afford to be more selective in their recruiting. Except the Army, they'll always take anybody.

The problem is if anything pops off and we need huge numbers, then the obesity and ADD meds will come into play and disqualify a lot of potential recruits.
