Business as usual is not an option for the U.S. military. With a growing demand for people in specialized fields such as cybersecurity, the Pentagon is beginning to rethink how it recruits and retains talent. This is a familiar theme for the defense community, which is also struggling to attract commercial interest to develop the new wave of dominant technologies.

In Philadelphia this week, Defense Secretary Ash Carter gave a speech laying out some ideas for increasing flexibility in personnel policies. He explained how the military increasingly competes for the same talent as corporate America. Careers involving new technologies require young folks with the necessary work ethic and skills. Unfortunately, they are also often intolerant of bureaucracies and excessive restrictions (such as drug testing).

The Defense Department needs a lot of these people, more than 3,000 in 2015 alone, and the Pentagon is willing to increase pay and relax a lot of the rules to encourage them.

Of these, weight is the most troublesome. According to Army Recruiting Command, obesity disqualifications are expected to account for 25% of the total by 2025, up from 18% in 2014. Even without competition, it will be difficult to find the recruits of tomorrow.

For starters they should stop warmongering and spying on their own citizens. Who wants to go be a pawn in the elites fight for personal gain?

Many don’t think this goes far enough. Tim Kane, a former Air Force officer whose 2011 Atlantic article “Why Our Best Officers are Leaving” ignited a firestorm of controversy, has suggested radical reforms. Discussing his book Bleeding Talent with TIME in 2013, Kane summarized his ideas into three buckets. First, individual commands should have hiring authority, not today’s centralized bureaucracy. Second, the performance evaluation system should be completely overhauled. Third, individuals should be able, even encouraged, to enter and exit the military multiple times.

Interesting ideas.

IIRC a lot of recruits are disqualified because they take ADD/ADHD medication.

Or if you're simply honest about previous drug use. Yes, Sergeant, I've smoked pot thousands of times, eaten psychedelics on a regular basis, and partake in uppers of various types every now and then. Is this acceptable?

If you are honest with them that you have done it in the past all that will do is keep you from getting certain jobs. Deny everything.

Not for long, apparently.

We need these people, but perhaps there should be separate service for cyber with their own standards.

I wanted to be a life taker and a heart breaker. Luckily we have a branch for that, but you can't do it if you're a disgusting fat body.

If they relax their stance on recruits with former felony convictions that have served their time, then I know one person who would sign up today. Me. 127 GT score, 93 percentile asvab, itching to have a full tenure military career but can't even enlist.

You could delegate some MOS to "non-combat" and let them be fatasses and nerds. Us real men will take care of the hard shite.

Obesity is not the biggest problem in the military.

The biggest problem is that they take anybody with a heartbeat and don't bother to make sure that they're ok in the head. You send a frick-up over to some desert for combat action, he becomes more of a frick-up.

Then he comes home and the military has to take care of thousands of frick-ups.

That`s what the military doctors and local social workers that I have encountered have said. Maybe they`re just fat and the military has mis-diagnosed them as, well, frick-ups.

10 years ago, you probably wouldn't have had a problem when they were begging for bodies. They are much, much more selective now.

Correct, they waived the felony thing for some crimes and the tattoo policy for visible tats on the neck and hands.

Usually because they're the only ones that qualify anymore...
25% too fat
5% felons
15% too many drugs (there is a limit)
15% preexisting physical condition
10% simply not apt enough ~25 asvab

All that's left are unfit gamers, some jocks and whackos that arent Identified yet.

You would think people would have enough sense to lie. What good could admitting drug use possibly do in this situation?

When I thought about enlisting, my primary concern was being selected for something with a secret or top secret clearance, and at least for TS, they would have found out I was trying to be a young Keith Richards. I was afraid of being thrown in Ft. Leavenworth
