PALO ALTO, Calif. – Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday it plans to deploy a fully autonomous and driverless ride-hailing car by 2021.

CEO Mark Fields set the target at Ford’s Research and Innovation facility here, which will double its staff to 300 and grow its footprint by 150,000 square feet by year’s end to respond to the challenge.

“This is one example of how we’re thinking about expanding our business into mobility more broadly,” Fields told USA TODAY. “Taking the driver out of the equation improves the economics for us as well as consumers.”

So the personal injury attorneys will sue Ford for the wrecks from their computer glitches. Deep pockets

But the amount of accidents will drop dramatically, so there's that.

Seems like a good idea at first, but it would also take at least half of the fun out of drinking and driving. No one ever says, "I feel like going for a drunk ride right now."

Eventually, they won't be able to get insurance.

Well as it stands right now, why would insurance companies offer insurance to automated cars if the business themselves will be liable for their actions?

I do not think the insurance companies are caught up to handle the technology advances.

Do you understand how insurance works?

Why not?

Automated vehicles will be a much lesser risk for insurers than person controlled. Once automated becomes a majority of the cars on the road (with much less risk), insurers will begin to squeeze out person controlled. Insurance companies tend to not insure high-risk activities when lower risk alternatives exist.

Or they might insure them but for astronomical premiums

Ford is by far, the domestic leader in innovation and production.

Tesla gets the headlines, Ford makes money and moves iron.

GM lost their way in the early 2000s and has never recovered.

In such a world, driving your own vehicle would be immensely safer than it is today, since frequency of collisions would plummet. The self-driving cars would supposedly have the ability to avoid accidents caused by human drivers. Therefore risk and liability go down, no?

Even with autonomous vehicles, some kind of way there will still be constant wrecks on the Basin bridge.
