Foam Insulation

More contractor threads, I know.
We are currently trying to decide between Foam, Blown in Blanket and good old BATT.
The A/C contractor is recommending BIBS because he says that Foam requires me to upgrade the attic furnace to 90%, as is required by state codeand will cost extra, plus the foam is about 2.5x the price of the BIBS, all in all a price difference of $10,000.00 to go with foam (includes outside return air, etc).
I've also heard to use BATT in the walls and just do BIBS in the attic.
Anyone have any experience with Foam vs. BIBS or BATT? I know there are a lot of horror stories out there, but we are going to live in this house a long time and I want it to be efficient.

We did foam in whole house and like it a lot. You will need an HVAC contractor who knows what he's doing but it really wasn't priced out of reason. Get some more bids on that.

If you can afford the foam now and plan to stay there, do it. It's exoensive up front but it's awesome. My attic is roughly the same temp as my house and my electric bills are dirt cheap. It will take a few years to make up the cost, but it's worth it if you are in the house for a long time.

I have foam and I love it. Low bills, clean attic, low temp in attic.
Only bad thing is if your roof ever leaks it might take awhile before you know it.

Its about 20% more I believe than conventional but worth it in the long run. Get a mechanical contractor that is familiar with this process and you will be fine. Also, make sure you use the singles that are approved for foam insulation. With foam they say the surface of the shingles gets hotter and the typical shingle will not hold up.
I personally know several people who have foamed their house and they all LOVE it. Zero complaints.

Did anyone run into higher A/C installation bills due to Foam?

Im sure they do charge more due to it being a non typical system. The units themselves have to be different and do cost more than a normal seer unit of the same size

your A/c tonnage should be cut down a lot by the foam installation. Mine was roughly cut in half. But you also have to get 2 stage(i think thats what its called, been a while)
We love our foam and praise it every chance I get. Im at 3112 living and our bill hasn't been over 230 yet and we keep it at 70 during the day, 61 at night, with a family of 4.
I love how clean the attic is mostly, but it sure is nice when having to go up there and its the same temp as the house.
Also think about getting the garage sprayed also and putting in the insulated doors. My garage stays within 10 degrees of the inside of my house. Also think about doing all the master br walls for sound proofing, which is another big plus for foam.
As far as overall cost, we paid 12,500 for the foam which was a lot more then batt, but when I did mine the Feds were giving a tax refund of 5k or something like that, so wasn't too bad for me.

I am in the same situation and decided to do foam in the attic and BIBS in the walls. Since I will be using all electric for A/C and heat, it was not a big deal and will actually downsize the cooling requirements.
