They are a tactical unit. They are regular officers who also perform these duties. They are summoned and they gear up and deploy as a unit. Equipment is very important.

Regular police uniforms are impractical in these situations.

the color of their clothing shouldn't matter. I'm not saying they shouldn't strap on their tactical equipment.

So if it shouldn't matter then why does it bother you so much?

They wear this type of tactical clothing for because:

1) Its fitted better for climbing, running, crawling, etc... than regular uniforms.

2) It provides more pockets and what not to carry equipment and gear.

3) Easier to clean and are more tear proof than normal uniforms.

Why Camo, OD green, etc...

Because there are more manufacturers use these colors than other colors. You can find the military colored tactical clothing cheaper than the other colors.

I didn't go through all that training to sit inside the car like a fricking civ

Go back then, because you weren't properly trained in anything else but being an easy target for the bad guy and a drain on combat power as your buddies have to drag your bloody body off the street rather than getting guns in the fight. As they fish you off the pavement, the sights go to them, the kill zone gets bigger and the body count goes up.

I pray these jihadi bastards stay relatively unskilled. If they get their act together they are going to pound the crap out of a PD one day.

You, and they, are not CAG coming in on a little bird. Don't pretend that you are.

Second of all, they just make themselves more of a target and allow their movements to be seen more easily

Third of all, if they claim they want to be seen to draw fire from the innocents, just wear grey or black like regular LE and put the bright "police" thing on your chest and back.

I also get confused

Clearly.

There's no reason for the entire PD to be congregated at that location right now.

The reason you end up seeing large groups of cops or military standing in one location, it's much easier to get a game plan together when you have all your personnel in front of you instead of having to make phone calls, radio calls (tying up radio for emergency traffic). What else can I help you with?
