(CNN)A terminally ill minor has become the first child to be euthanized in Belgium since age restrictions were lifted in the country two years ago, according to several sources. A Belgian lawmaker told CNN affiliate VTM that the physician-assisted suicide happened within the past week. The child, who was suffering from an incurable disease, had asked for euthanasia, Sen. Jean-Jacques De Gucht told VTM. The identity of the child and age are unknown. "I think it's very important that we, as a society, have given the opportunity to those people to decide for themselves in what manner they cope with that situation," said Gucht, a supporter of euthanasia legislation.

I think this needs to be a right to everyone everywhere. Don't see the issue if someone doesn't want to suffer.

A 17-year-old has become the first child to die by euthanasia in Belgium after the country adopted new rules in 2014.

The patient was being reported as being in unbearable physical pain.

I don't see the big deal. The disease is incurable, the patient is in tremendous pain, and the parents and child gave consent to the doctors.

The only people who don't want this are people who are overly religious bible thumpers. Probably think mother Theresa deserves to be a saint

This kid absolutely deserves to go if he has a terminal illness and is in unbearable pain. Absurd that anyone disagrees

But Mother Theresa is a fricking Saint so shut your whore mouth

I saw my uncle die in incredible pain from multiple types of cancer. His body took almost 5 months to finally shut down and die but not once can I recall in those 5 final months where he enjoyed even one second of life. Screw the bible thumpers who try and force their horseshi* "morality" on others. If a person knows they are never getting better and they are going to die in agony, let them die with some decency.

The government should have kept that child alive even if in terrible pain because the lord works in mysterious ways.

Euthanasia, be it for dogs, cats, lizards or terminal or criminal people, is still killing. Dirty business all around.

I don't like your title either.

"Die" is something that is passive.

This was an active process, and action.

It'd be better as:

The first child has been euthanized in Belgium

I'm more fond of the "wink, wink/nod nod" that hospice nurses in the U.S. Give to the terminally ill. As in "here is enough morphine via PCA pump to control the Pain". It gets the job done without anyone trying to be Kavorkian.

I think there should be government panels that decide who lives and dies.

Oh wait, there are. Thanks Obama.

euthanasia in this sense is a type of homicide by definition.
