You're right... there's a large, multi-laned road with no traffic lights that runs through the middle of the city. Why on earth would anyone ever think that people would use that for intra-city travel?

Furthermore that multi-laned road without traffic lines and exits ever so often serves a a large barrier that prevents drivers from crossing from one side to the other except at a few locations or at an entrance or exit ramp where they compete for space with cars entering and leaving the interstate.

For instance from College to Essen there is no way to cross the interstate except on the two primary roads listed creating flash points.

Yeah, it is like 90 on the Westbank of NOLA. No way that could be made into an interstate.

Those areas didn't become problematic until many years after the interstate was completed through Baton Rouge (sometime in the late 70's, iirc), which is a lesson more in no-sightedness than short-sightedness.

In terms of forward-thinking there needs to be (in order of benefit):

1. A southern loop with a bridge at St. Gabe that connects through 10 at Prairieville and 12 at Livingston
2. A northern loop that connects at Livingston (making it a true loop)
3. Finish the Lafy-Nawlins connection of 49
4. 6-lane 10 down to New Orleans (but for now I would settle for 6-laning to Gonzales)

You need to get this out of your mind. It just isnt gonna happen with Spanish Lake there.

Then it isn't gonna happen at all.

Cause this toll road cutting BR in half is gonna be DOA.

The people complaining about this never getting done are probably the same people who would bitch about a tax being implemented to fund it.

building another bridge as you said would be the ideal solution albeit expensive solution. In the mean time there are several things they could do to improve traffic over the bridge for fairly cheap:

1. close the washington street exit.
2. force trucks on port allen side entering I-10 east bound to do so at LA 415 instead of at LA 1. (the ramp onto the bridge from LA 1. is too steep and short, trucks meet I -10 traffic at about 20 mph at the most, which causes a severe back up because I-10 east traffic is at 60+ mph, traffic piles up severely because of this, and causes fender benders regularly because east bound traffic not paying attention)
3. eliminate truck traffic on Baton Rouge side from entering the bridge west bound from St. Ferdinand. same reason as #2 above.
4. eliminate the intersection on the port allen side at the base of the LA 1 North exit off of the bridge. the light is literally at the point where traffic merges. in the afternoon traffic backs all the way up the off ramp onto the bridge eliminating any flow on the far right lanes. allow traffic from bridge space to merge, force access to commercial dr (truck traffic) to LA 415 only.

These things listed above would be extremely cheap, minimal lane painting changes, and a few signs installed. to simplify my thoughts, the major problem with the bridge is fast moving traffic meeting extremely slow moving traffic right at the bridge. a very unfortunate location because for some reason people already get anxious driving there. it's a bridge, get over it. just some thoughts from someone who drives over the bridge several times everyday.

Sure it was shortsightedness and 40 years later we are still paying for it.

Worst engineering job in the state.

This

This is the choke point that backs up traffic to gross tete. 18 wheelers lined up on the bridge for miles in the middle lane all waiting to merge into the Washington street exit choke point.

I 10 shuts down because of this bullshite.

Oh I know it wouldn't ever fly short of having enough people in DC with enough balls to expropriate the needed land, but since it's the best possible idea I'll keep championing it.
