A Southern California classroom was filled with high school freshmen when one of them realized that she needed to run to the restroom.

Patrick Henry High School in San Diego, however, had a policy at the time stipulating that students were not permitted to take bathroom breaks during class — and the teacher took a strict interpretation of it.

The teacher, Gonja Wolf, forbid the 14-year-old girl from leaving the classroom that Wednesday in February 2012. Instead, she let the girl pee in a bucket, then empty it in a classroom sink, according to a lawsuit.

The gossip reportedly spread through the school, then hit the news media, leading to the girl’s anxiety, depression and an attempted suicide.

Now five years later, the San Diego Unified School District was ordered Wednesday to pay the student, who is now 19, more than $1.25 million in damages and $41,000 in medical costs

She attempted suicide afterward, hence the costs. I mean she's 14 years old...

Back in the day my teachers would be so strict they would make you shite your pants before they'd let you out before the bell rang. frickers deserve to pay.

As an aside, I had one kid who had a Fisher Tear on his bung. The stool softener he had to take for about a month while it healed caused him to shite about 3-4 times a day and when he had to go, he had to go. I had to write a letter to his teachers and explain everything before they would allow a bathroom break during class after he had a few close calls.

$1.25m seems a little much just as a first impression. But in regards to the teacher, how fricking stupid can you be? I think that teachers and school administration too often get preoccupied with their authority over their students and forget that they are dealing with human beings. You can be reasonable with students and afford them a basic level of respect.

What if this had happened in the area where you live and you, as a taxpayer, would ultimately be footing the bill?

I agree someone needs to be punished but the amount of money school districts have been paying out in lawsuits as a result of the actions of a single teacher is out of control.

Moral to this whole story is the intelligence level of the "teacher". Having a student piss in a bucket inside the classroom then washing the piss down the classroom sink? Wow.

The problem here isn't really the teacher but the zero tolerance policies that school districts run on. They are little tax payer funded dictatorships, often separately elected from municipal govt. The people that run these institutions think they are untouchable, and most of the time are.

My point is the person that lost her job was not the one that created the stupid rules to begin with.

Are you saying it was school policy to make kids piss in buckets? From what I see it was the actions of a single teacher that cost a school district $1.3 million, not the actions of a school district that caused a teacher to lose her job.

If it's so bad that you had to pee in a bucket why not defy the teacher and go to the restroom?

Yes

quote:

The school district’s attorney said that Wolf, a favorite art teacher, thought she had found a way around the school’s no-bathroom-break policy.

In a “lapse of judgment, she thought that was a good idea,” attorney Kathryn Martin told jurors this month, according to the Union-Tribune.

Martin added that although the school had imposed a policy banning bathroom breaks during class time, it expected teachers to use “common sense” when determining whether to enforce it, according to the newspaper.

That "expected" part is just the school district covering their arse.

That's what I would have done too. Not sure why you would prefer to piss in a bucket rather than take the punishment of just leaving the class.

On a side, I would shite in a bucket in front of the class for way less.
