“Drought conditions in the Colorado River Basin have been two decades in the making. To meet this moment, we must continue to work together, through a commitment to protecting the river, leading with science and a shared understanding that unprecedented conditions require new solutions,” said Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Camille Calimlim Touton. “The draft released today is the product of ongoing engagement with the basin states and water commissioners, the 30 basin tribes, water managers, farmers and irrigators, municipalities and other stakeholders. We look forward to continued work with our partners in this critical moment.”

I mean, they gave the states the opportunity to figure out a solution on their own. And of course, they didn't.

Ginger Zee @Ginger_Zee We were here at Lake Mead with the record low of 27% capacity last summer. Took a photo yesterday, very little change=28%. Mead gets water from snowmelt in the Colorado River Basin. That water has to stop at Powell first. They’ll be holding it at Powell (expected to rise at best to 36%). We would need several big winters like the one we just had to bring them both back up. Conservation is key & @USInterior just announce a plan that could include unprecedented federal guidance to preserve this water: https://doi.gov/pressreleases/interior-department-announces-next-steps-protect-stability-and-sustainability-colorado Image Image

Mead hasn't starting coming up yet because most of the water is still locked up as snow

Crazy that Wyoming is part of that multi-state pact. One river in the state is a tributary of the Colorado.

Not for long. The big melt is starting in the headwaters of the Colorado.

And while the winter has been good in some of the basins that feed the CO River, it hasnt been exceptional like up around the Great Salt Lake or in California.

Also, they proposed 3 options, not only the one OP fear mongered.
