Let's play devil's advocate and show why these kind of facebook posts are stupid and appeal mainly to the lowest common denominator:
50% of all petroleum refined in the United States is used for the production of transportation fuels. The crunchy granola wookies in Seattle could persuasively argue that protesting an oil rig while paddling around in plastic kayaks isn't logically inconsistent because:
1) "I want to leave enough petroleum in the ground to ensure future generations get their own plastic dinghies"
2) "We should cut back on new drilling, because I don't want to have to paddle to my job at the vegan feminist anarcho-syndicalist coffeeshop collective when the ice caps melt."
3) "Oil rigs are fine in places like LA/TX that people in Seattle are totally fine shitting on/forgetting/writing off as racist and hopeless, but the Arctic is one of like three places humans haven't totally fricked up yet (and we're trying our hardest!). Maybe we should make extra-sure we don't Exxon-Valdez that bitch."
I'm not really an environmentalist. I have a hard time remembering to recycle. I just think it's easy to armchair-QB criticize these people who got off their asses to protest something they feel strongly about...especially when they're probably right. Wouldn't it be great if LSU students/Louisiana residents felt the same way about our Governor?

this is the main reason
they are fine with it as long as they don't see it

Most of them aren't smart enough to figure that out.

What are they supposed to do? Kayak down here to protest in our state and against our elected officials?
No, we are responsible for our state, you don't get to give them a hard time for not coming here. We are too far gone anyway, they just don't want their state to get ravaged the way ours has.
We really have nobody but ourselves to blame for things like the BP oil spill. No, I am not directly responsible, but we all allow these corporations to come in and rape our land and our waters.
That said, keep on drilling baby. I want to drive as often as I want.

Who cares? I like Sirachi but I don't want the factory in my neighborhood.

It isn't as if they're protesting the concept of oil as a whole, but we can't let a simple logical conclusion like that get in the way of our righteous indignation.
