Father warns Congress about AI scammer who sounded just like his son

Gary Schildhorn was on his way to work in 2020 when he got a phone call from someone who sounded just like his adult son Brett.
“He was crying and talking and said that he had been in an accident,” Schildhorn said as he described the call to our Washington News Bureau. “He had broken his nose. He had hurt a pregnant woman. He was arrested. He was in jail.”
Schildhorn is an attorney in Philadelphia and instinctively wanted to do whatever he could to help his son.
He said he was told his son had a public defender named Barry Goldstein.
The supposed man named Goldstein told Schildhorn he had to wire $9,000 through a Bitcoin kiosk, which uses cryptocurrency, in order to bond his son out of jail.
“I’m a father. I’m a lawyer. My son is in trouble,” said Schildhorn. “I’m in action mode… I had to act to help my son.”
On Thursday, he told members of the Senate Special Committee on Aging about the moment he realized the caller never really was Brett.
“A few minutes later, a FaceTime call from my son,” said Schildhorn during his testimony. “He’s pointing to his nose. My nose is fine. I’m fine. You’re being scammed.”
Luckily, Schildhorn learned the truth before ever sending any money. But that’s not the case for everyone.
According to lawmakers, scams cost Americans $9 billion last year – and older Americans are especially vulnerable.

Dead giveaway right there.

Barry Goldberg would have sounded more real…

I'm sure our geriatric leaders are ready to jump in and handle this as soon as they remember how to log on to the wifi.

How are boomers dumb enough to fall for this stuff yet figure out how to wire money to a Bitcoin kiosk

Just give your kids a code word to use to prove it is them.

This sounds like BS. Any attorney worth a damn would be very skeptical the SECOND he was asked to wire money anywhere. Especially via crypto-currency

How many lawyers does he know that take money via cryptocurrency?

My dad got the same call about my brother about a month ago. The broken nose is supposed to hide the voice being different.
As he has always been prone to do with things involving the kids, my dad just handed the phone to my mom. She asked whoever it was to name the city my brother was born in and the scam fell apart.

There is a girl I know from my hometown that claims she had been hacked on facebook and a fake video of her telling people to send money to venmo or cashapp and she would send them money back as a glitch
The video they had of her and her voice was pretty damn realistic.
just basically stated her name, and that she knows it looks sketchy but it's not a scam.
next thing I know, I get a new friend request like 2 days later, same girl who says that she was hacked and to not listen to anything on her profile.
and you just see all the dumbass people who comment back and say "well we thought it was you so we sent money"
and all these people look exactly how you would expect a small podunk town in arkansas to look... just completely stupid populance...

Beyond some of the other stuff already said, this right here is a gigantic red flag

Absolutely. But you have no idea how many people get taken by this kind of scam. And more than a few are highly educated, professional people.

This happened to my uncle. About 2 or so years ago. Same exact story and everything.
Luckily my Uncle felt something was fishy and didn't send the money.
Said it sounded exactly like his son.

Or perhaps we're getting a glimpse into how profoundly stupid some of these people are. Their supposed "high education and profession" might be artificially propped up by wealthy upbringings.
Editing to add: old people are exempt from this. The tech knowledge gap is too much for most older people.

Something very similar happened to my late grandfather. Was told it was my cousin who lives many states away. My grandfather ended up sending 3 fedex packages containing cash each time. He was able to get one of them back. The other two had been rerouted by the scammer already and couldn't be retrieved. This works better on elderly people obviously. Sad world we live in.
