I have to make the run from Slidell to Lafayette tomorrow. If I take the 190 route, what exactly is it? Let's say I can run I-12 to I-10 from Slidell to Baton Rouge - once I'm at I-10 in BR, where do I jump to 190 and how does that get me to Lafayette?

You know they have maps on the internet. They are pretty detailed.

A map shows me 190 to Opelousas, then 49 to Lafayette. That seems pretty far out of the way. I assumed that someone who lives in the area and is familiar with it on a daily basis might be able to tell me a more direct path. But that's only because I have common sense.

you would pick up 190 off of I12, its the airline hwy west exit.

Get on 190. Not fast, but open

Now I'm not much of what one would call a 'scaredy cat' or a 'bitch,' or any number of other synonyms, but when a really long bridge with no shoulders sits in precipitation in sub-freezing temperatures for an extended period of time, I would recommend avoiding it for both your safety and annoyance, when someone inevitably does crash.

I mean yeah it's gonna be out of the way, probably an extra 30 miles of driving. You would take I 12 to I 10, take I110 north then west on 190 to Opelousas, then south on I49.

But I think ( and am hoping) I10 will be open tomorrow

That's as direct as it gets without the Atchafalaya bridge. I remember my mother saying it used to take them 6 hours to drive to New Orleans to watch her brother play football for Tulane back in the 60s before the bridge was open. It's a 3 hour drive today (lots of it has to do with road conditions, of course. The 190-49 path isn't really all that far out of the way and a nice, easy drive these days).

The maps aren't hiding any roads

Where can one get info on the road closures?

here

Back when the Atchafalaya was closed for an oil rig explosion for that several week period in 07 or so, I would go up to 76 in Port Allen and take that West until it ended, then North to 190 (from BR to Lafayette, of course). It was really only good because of the huge lack of traffic compared to 190 for that same stretch (with its red lights and such, and maaaajor detours from I-10). I'd go 190 in lieu of 76 outside of heavy traffic on a regular occasion to drive that direction.

Thanks, I remember that blowout, luckily I didn't have to drive to or from Lafayette then.

Maybe I've lived around New Orleans too long, but there are many roads that, while they aren't hidden on maps, I would not recommend driving.

From New Orleans take Hwy 90 west to Morgan City, straight shot to Laffy on Hwy 90 west from Morgan City.
