You got me dude. WWI started only 19 years before the Nazis came to power and not exactly 20. Boy do I feel stupid.

That's like saying the 20th century was 115 years ago, then when someone corrects you by saying it was between 114 years ago and 14 years ago, pointing out that you were off by one year.

When you talk about time elapsing between things, the years counted are the ones from the end of the first to the beginning of the second--not beginning to beginning (and still being incorrect, FWIW).

I can't believe I'm explaining this to a grown person. How the hell do you end up anywhere on time?

I own a watch and show up 15 minutes early. As the Marines taught me, if you're not 15 minutes early, you're late. I'm sorry you can't accept generalizations that are off by a few years. I'm sure you will correct me if Im wrong, but WWI ended in 1917. So maybe closer to 16 years instead of 20.

There was a move about the "lost battalion" made a few years ago starting the kid from Silver Spoons. Seems like it was made for TV but it was really well made. Seems like it was titled "The Lost battalion".

"The Lost Battalion" is a true story...Charles Whittlesely won the Medal of Honor for his leadership during that battle, but never readjusted to peacetime. He disappeared during a ocean voyage in 1921 where he apparently committed suicide.

Cher Ami, the carrier pigeon who was able to get through and helped save the battalion was stuffed after her death in 1919 and you can see her in the Smithsonian...

The DIRECT cause of WWII was the treaty of Versailles which ended WWI. The ominous reparations and other penalties incurred by Germany { mainly championed by the French}, led to the economic collapse and subsequent rise of the german Nazi party.

In horseshoes and hand grenades you'd be right on the mark.

Come on, man. Armistice was in Nov 1918 and the treaty of Versailles was in the summer of 1919. Less than 14 years after the official end of WWI and the crushing reparations and restrictions of Versailles, the Nazis took control of the Reichstag in early March 1933--interestingly, the same day as Roosevelt's first day in office (inaugurated the day before).

And just like Roosevelt, the Nazis came to power via democratic elections.

Frightening thought isn't it. Then again, look at the decisions our electorate continues to make.

Yes. Because America now is so much like post WWI Germany.

FIFY! The Nazi comment was meant as a joke, I thought is was kind of obvious, but I guess it wasn't!

Whether or not America is like post World War I Germany is not the point. I was merely stating that our country continues to make bad decisions by sending the same politicians to Washington over and over, despite not seeing any leadership or creative thinking on the part of those politicians. I, like many Americans, are dissatisfied with the career politicians that seem to be in it only for their self interests.

If you want to talk modern day politics go do it on the political board. I'd rather this thread remain a discussion about WWI
