TBH man, I myself enjoy a drink as much as anyone. The real question here is how close to the dad and the bday kid are ya. If you are close you need to just suck it up and go, atleast long enought le the kid and dad know you care. Just make up an excuse that you have to leave early to catch the game if it is that important o ya. Make suer you make that "prior engament" early enough before the game that noone suspects anyting.

If booze is that important you probably shouldnt go and just tell the kid happy birthday a day early. I will say "Dont be a dick", show up for a period of time if watching and drinking is that important.

Co-worker's friends do this kind of thing. Glad that was not popular when my kids were young. Parties were for the kiddos.
