Where did my post with the image of Germany go? Anyway, there really needs to be a better system than just sticking people in a small four corner room. You can't keep everyone locked up forever... until they do something like this so they are locked up after the damage is already done.

Did anyone see the 60mins segment on jails in Germany (I am not trying to make a "german" joke. I am serious). They actually rehabilitate prisoners. Its not at all what American's think about when they think jail. Their jails are more like a civilized community in which everyone has to stay within the parameters of the facility, but they have very few people return. It saves a lot of money and actually does some good.

Germany is also less than 1% of a certain racial demographic that is represented on a larger scale in the U.S.

Edited for sensitivity.

And here comes the blatant racism.

because every case isn't the same and some people change and go on to do good.

You realize that edit doesn't make it not racist, right?

The American recidivism rate is around 70% or so last I checked. Many other countries are quite a bit lower though.

So all the criminals in Germany, who are in gangs, commit murder, etc is different because of their skin color? Also, you are saying race places a bigger factor than lack of education?

and the 30% could also mean that they didn't get caught again...not that they were angels, right?

We could guess which % were still problematic, but for me, it's not a risk I'm really willing to accept. If you are convicted of a crime, I think you should lose your citizenship.

Alaska just voted to take on significant CJ reform which includes not imprisoning drug offenders and other non violent offenders and use the prison system as it should be used, keeping dangerous people away from the public

Hey remember how our Founding Fathers rebelled against a government that used criminal punishment as a way to control political speech? Remember how they wrote a whole bunch of protections for the people into our constitution to protect us from government?

Yes let's undo that despite the fact that crime rates are generally falling all around the country. Sensational news headlines told me to be real scared.

A good step. The lack of employment options for convicted people is a big issue but very hard to tackle without stepping on Liberty. One obvious answer is stop criminalizing so much behavior.

Correct. Felons with no violent history being unable to find jobd and being supported by the public is a huge issue

crime makes the criminal, or the criminal makes the crime?

1900-pick pocket
1950-car theft
2000-id theft

things change, the root of people does not
