Why does it matter how much money is made by parent 1 or parent 2? Why can't "AGI" be enough? Why does it matter what our level of education is? why does it matter when we got married?

Really, I'm just curious.

It determines eligibility for Pell Grants and other programs. There are more sources of money at stake than just TOPS.

I've always wondered about this. Why does it matter about parents money? What about the kids that don't have access to parents money?

That's what I forgot ... All these parents who don't help their kids but could ... That's fine. But it's held against the kid right?? Unless they're independent? But how do you go about that? Just don't claim them on your taxes??? Idk.

Get emancipated. My parents did that when I was 16 so I could get a car insurance policy in my name(if I remember right, long time). When I went to college, I didn't have to put their income on my FAFSA. Big help since I didn't have money & their income was actually 4 people's income since they were remarried.

When I filled mine out it said expected family contribution $0. I filled my oldest child's one recently and it said expected family contribution $26k. Big shock for me.

When did you fill yours out?? Are you back in school? This wasn't even a "thing" when I enrolled in college in 1987 or at least I don't think it was.

And I really don't think it asked for ethnicity!

Well he's almost 19 ... would an emancipation really have to happen? I mean he's an adult at 18. Don't have a clue how these things work.

It just got me to thinking about all the people here on the OT who said their parents didn't help but could have ... how do you hold that against a student for grants/low interest loans/etc?

In general, these students are still dependents of their parents. And as was mentioned, the FAFSA form is not just for TOPS. It is filled out by people all over the country trying to get loans, grants, and scholarships to go to school.

I totally get that but isn't the parents section held against people for loans/grants?? Didn't have loans/grants and neither did our oldest son so I truly don't know. We just fill out the forms as required.

I guess I just feel that those whose parents won't help should be able to get the same things (loan/grant) as those whose parents CAN'T help. In addition to a job of course.
